America’s veto power renders their bid largely symbolic, but there could be leverage gained– like indirect recognition of statehood– in the process. I'm not sure this debate is ok as an OP according to the guidelines, but it was much more interesting than the other OP ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/11342943 ) that was commenting only parts of it.
