Israel right to say 'Enough!' to grotesquely biased UNHRC inquiryIt is appalling and hypocritical in the extreme that the unrepresentative, undemocratic UN Human Rights Council dares call for sanctions against Israel, even as it routinely and conveniently ignore the grossest human rights violations of many of its member states.
As a re-elected Member of Knesset for the Labor Party, I was disturbed by two developments in the past couple of days: the UN Human Rights Councils (UNHRC) call for sanctions against the State of Israel, and the decision of the New York Times to lambast Israel for boycotting the UNHRCs four-yearly review of its human rights record.
I mention my party affiliation because I want it to be very clear that this ought not be, and for the most part is not, a partisan issue within Israel. While the Netanyahu government has made many foreign policy errors, and in my view helped weaken our position and deepen our international isolation, the UNHRC is quite another matter. The UN Human Rights Council represents the very depths to which an unrepresentative, undemocratic international body can sink....
...Because of UNHRC processes, the universal periodic review essentially acts as a rubber stamp on the behavior of the very worst human rights violators. China, North Korea, and countless other nations whose human rights records make Colonel Gaddafi look like Mother Theresa, routinely get a pass from the Council. Syria, which is estimated to have murdered over 60,000 people over the past couple of years, rarely finds itself in the Councils spotlight.
But if an alien descended from the heavens and looked in on the UNHRCs agenda, they would immediately conclude that one country above all others is the most grotesque human rights violator of all time. And its not Syria, Iran, North Korea or even the Councils venerable vice president, Sudan. It is Israel, the Middle Easts only democracy, that is the only country in the world that the UNHRC deems worthy of a standing agenda item. Perhaps even more incredibly, almost 40 per cent of all UNHRC resolutions condemning a specific country have been directed against the Jewish state.

(44 posts)then they have committed human rights violations. It doesn't matter what other countries do. You're disturbed that they've concluded you aren't necessarily any better or worse than other states? Heaven forbid! I'm sorry that the U.N. said something you didn't like. Oh well, it's not like the U.N. opinion matters. Settlers will still settle in areas and kill Palestinians without due process because they're not Jews. The Labor party is no different than Netanyahu. That's why they had no chance of winning. Let's kill more Palestinians with live rounds and say that Israel has a right to defend itself.
Oh wait. Caring about the rights of non Israelis is anti-semitic. I'll go flog myself. Thanks.

(25,699 posts)Where you were absolutely silent as one hundred and fifty-eight Palestinians were killed in Gaza? Not a word from you. Not even a token gesture of sympathy. No criticism as your fellow "Progressive Zionists" explained to us that gazans "deserve it" for living in proximity to Hamas or even - GASP - voting for them. A couple dozen dead Arab children weren't worth your insight or commentary.
But when three Israelis were killed by a rocket in the same conflict, you ranted and raved that DU was not showing enough angst and wailing over their tragic, terrible fates. Everyone on DU was a terrible person who just does not care about Israeli lives lost.
No, you have never said the specific line, "caring about the rights of non-Israelis is antisemitic." You don't need to. You display that the appropriate response to Arab deaths is indifference, and the only acceptable response ot Jewish deaths is great demonstrations of shirt-rending and howling at the sky.

Foundation slams Ayalon clip removing Muslim holy site
The al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowment and Heritage condemned Wednesday a video by Israel's deputy foreign minister depicting the disappearance of the Dome of the Rock.
A clip of a removed portion of a film by Danny Ayalon that was leaked to Israeli media depicts the dome collapsing in the background as a Jewish temple rises in its place.
Israeli media reported that Ayalon's film was attempting to show time rewinding backwards to show an ancient Jewish temple on the site, removing the present-day Muslim holy site in a video transition that appeared to show it collapsing.
The Times of Israel reported that foreign ministry officials expressed concern about the depiction of the dome crumbling away, so they changed it to a dissolving transition.

Wild boars released by Israeli settlers have attacked and seriously wounded a Palestinian man in the northern West Bank, Palestinian security sources said.
53-year-old Hikmat Abdul Mu'ti from the town of Beit Rima was hospitalized ten days ago after the animals attacked him while he was walking to his fields. According medical sources at Yasser Arafat Hospital in the city of Salfit, the man sustained a 'deep wound,' and is still in the hospital.
The security sources said that settlers from the Ariel settlement deliberately release wild boars, especially in Kana valley fields which belong to the West Bank village of Deir Istiya. In the past these boars have been known to damage crops in that valley and frequently attack farmers.
The Palestinian police reported about another similar attack by a boar against a woman and her child from the village of Sarta near Salfit.

Tamimi: Israel working to build Third Temple
Supreme Judge Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi said Monday that Israeli institutions, settler groups and the government are working to fulfill 18th century Rabbi Vilna Goan's prophecy declaring that the Third Temple would be re-built by 16 March 2010.
He said archeological excavations have caused structural damage to the Al-Marwani Mosque, under the Al-Aqsa Mosque's northern walls, and to Palestinian homes in the Old City of Jerusalem.
The sheikh further alleged that a plan had been implemented in 1993 to intensify efforts to "Judaize" Jerusalem by establishing two major settlements around the city and a military brigade dedicated to closing off the city and separating it from its surrounding neighborhoods.

(25,699 posts)That's a hilarious criticism coming from a state that was created by colonial fiat against the wishes of the population in the territory, that continues to bar half is population from residence or participation, and rules over another five million people with no respect for civil or human rights whatsoever. This nation only keeps its ass out of the fire for its own actions because it's buddy-buddy with a permanent veto-holder on the security council (how democratic, King-for-life status!) and this position is defended by people who, like Shira, believe that certain varieties of human being are not entitled to political rights, on the basis of fiat from an unelected unrepresentative body of colonial powers.
All this article is - along with others like it - is a bunch of bigots crying that they might actually suffer consequences for their actions. Did you know that sanctions have exit clauses? "Stop doing X, and we will lift sanction Y"? Maybe Israel should consider the possibility of not doing X? Crazy thought, I know. Much easier to kick and scream and cry and pretend that the consequences you face have absolutely nothing to do with your own actions.

So heres how the UPR rubber hit the road of crimes against humanity in Syria. On October 7, 2011, the Syrian vice-minister of foreign affairs and his entourage took their places in the Council chamber. And then the Cubans said: the Syrian government is working for the human rights of its people. The North Koreans said: we commend Syria on its efforts taken to maintain security and stability. The Iranians said: we appreciate the efforts of the government of Syria to promote and protect human rights. Ditto Sudan, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Algeria, Lebanon, China, Zimbabwe, Burma/Myanmar, and so on.
Four days later, on behalf of the three countries charged with compiling recommendations, Mexico reported to the Council: Syria received a total of 179 recommendations
It is a pleasure to inform you that 98 recommendations were accepted and 26 shall be considered. Among the recommendations that "did not enjoy the support" of Syria were immediately end attacks on peaceful protesters and bring violators to account, put an end to secret detentions and allow journalists to freely exercise their profession. At the end of this stage of the UPR, the President of the Council turned to Syria and signed off with I thank both you and your delegation for your participation in the UPR.
At the time, there were 2,600 dead Syrian citizens at the hands of their own government. And Assad got the message about the human rights bona fides of the UN.
The next and final stage of the UPR took place in Geneva on March 15, 2012 by which time there were 11,000 dead. On that occasion, the Council formally adopted the so-called outcome of the UPR a report containing no findings and no decision to take action. It was gaveled through without comment from the President with these words: May I now propose that the Council adopts the decision on the outcome of the Universal Periodic Review of Syria? I see no objection.
There are now over 60,000 dead in Syria.

(25,699 posts)First off, as is typical of the slop you eat, it pummels "antisemitism" into a meaningless term. A fact needs to sink through your head, and the head of every other fucking Zionist goofball ever; Israel does not speak for the Jews. Israel is not the Hebrew Lorax. The best you're going to squeeze out of this is "anti-Israel."
But wait! Even that would be complete fucking bullshit (Bullshit? From Shira?!) Because the entire premise of "antisemitism" (*cough*) in this article stems from the fact that the UPR system is the same for all of the UN's 192 member states. BWUH-HUH-WUH-BUH, how preposterous! But, but, but, people are extra-mean to Israel! Okay, so just dismiss reccomendations. It's dumb, but hey - a cornerstone of the UN is preservation of national sovereignty. It's not like Israel is ever going to abide by anything passed against it anyway, so what's all the whining about?
It then lies about the Goldstone Report, calls the people aboard the Mavi Mamara "terrorists" and insists that the United States is "bullying" Israel. Yes. Encouragement to participate is now "bullying."
What a bunch of babies.
But hey. if Israel hates everything about the UN so much, it's free to leave at any time. Seriously, door's that way. Don't forget to tip your driver, buhbye.

(30,109 posts)And if the UN is going to be a mutual praise society for the absolute worst violators of human rights (like Syria or Libya) then why expect them to be fair WRT Israel?
Your refusal to criticize the UN on its record WRT Libya & Syria, or its voting in Mauritania, Sudan, and Iran onto other HR panels goes to show this isn't about human rights to you. You're an anti-Israel firster like they are.

Also as we've covered, you are an advocate of ethnic cleansing, violence against civilians, and institutional race discrimination. (30,109 posts)I'm just pointing out your hypocrisy WRT human rights and racism, since you and yours repeatedly state that's what you're all about. You demonstrate repeatedly you're all for the UN's racist agenda and abuse of human rights.
Assume the worst about me all you want. I know and you know the constant ad hominem attacks are all you have. My take on human rights and the UN is that I'm all for fair non-politicized treatment there. I have no problem with the UN taking on the world's worst human rights violators and working their way down the list (from worst to best in HR's) until eventually they've covered everyone. You, OTOH, appear happy to see Israel as the #1 agenda 24-7-365 to the extent far worse around the world is virtually ignored or even praised by the UN. Your position couldn't be more illiberal and rightwing, and I'll keep reminding you of that.
Even this from you is projection, as it couldn't describe you better:
WRT Abbas, the fact is your criticism of him doesn't come close to the vitriol you spew against Israel. I didn't say you don't criticize him. Only that you do so with kid gloves when it comes to his views and actions that are 100x worse than Israel's.

The state of Israel has gone to the UN to beat the drums of war against Iran.
The state of Israel has gone to the UN to protest about its treatment.
Conversely the state of Israel also flips the bird at the UN; resolution after resolution against it.
Israel has it both ways and is loving it.

(30,109 posts)On Friday, UN Watch won another small victory for human rights, sanity and the victims of Col. Qaddafi, when the U.N. Human Rights Council announced it was shelving a report -- prepared prior to the current massacres in Libya -- that lavishly praised the Libyan regime for its record on human rights. See quotes here.
Although the U.N. last week suspended Libya from the council, the overwhelmingly pro-Qaddafi report remained scheduled to be presented on March 18 and then adopted by a council resolution.
But the sham came to halt when UN Watch sounded the alarm, exposing the report as a fraud and demanding that it be sidelined. The story went viral: UN Watch was interviewed on CNN International and Al Jazeera. The New York Times featured the story in today's Week in Review section. UN Watch was additionally quoted by Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, The Washington Post online, Asian News International, The New York Sun, The Atlantic online, The Vancouver Sun, Czech daily newspaper Právo, Italys LOpinione delle Liberta, SwissInfo, Estonias Ekspress, Spains El Correo, and Spains Radio Televisión Española.

My all-time favorite is the ordinary hazelnut. There's something about the technique of cracking it so it falls apart at once with only a few shards if that, then popping the morsel in my mouth as I drop the shell into the shell-bowl, that makes me feel absolutely decadent. It's the whole ritual that counts. After a few of those I'll tackle a brazil nut. Those babies take considerable technique to crack, to angle the shell in the cracker just right so as to extract the nut whole and in one piece. But when successful the project is totally worth it. I take my time to eat a successful brazil nut, while maybe eyeing the bowl for likely walnuts. Walnuts, too, take some learning - because they're a bit large for the usual nut crackers and the shell is fairly round and smooth they'll sometimes slip, especially in the hands of children. Then one learns how to crack them along the seam and the aim is to get a perfect partition with no shards. When that happens it's a languorous ecstasy as you set back in the comfort of the people around you and while picking the meat from the half-shell.
