Israel/Palestine
Related: About this forumStudent Activists for Palestine — the Parody
Since the Nakba in 1948, the people of Palestine have been systematically oppressed by the illegal occupation of Palestine. Their land has been stolen, their homes demolished for no reason (I mean, its their land they can build where ever they want), their babies murdered indiscriminately by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), their cities ethnically cleansed. Justice in Palestine has been silenced. This is why I write. I write to inspire you to stand up for equality, just as great Che Guevara did, just as the fearless Noam Chomsky does, and just as I was inspired to do when my $60,000-per-year private university held Israel Apartheid Week....
...Now Im not quite sure what we were protesting, but I know it was something about prisoners being put in jail for blowing up Jews (which is obviously necessary for the liberation of Palestine). Anyway, we held up our iPhone 5′s and chanted for justice: Israel Israel you cant hide, we charge you with genocide! After a while we got tired of that and some of my Muslim friends started switching it up with, Khaybar, Khaybar ya Yahud, jaysh Muhammad sauf yaud. Im still not sure what that one means, but it was catchy, so I said it too. Then, you wouldnt believe what happened next. People supporting the Zionist entity showed up and started talking about how the Jews only attack and occupy because Hamas fires rockets and uses human shields.
I mean, I think thats what they were saying but I actually couldnt really hear because we just yelled louder whenever the Jews came close, but I mean, come on, Hamas is an organization of freedom fighters, and everyone knows that the Jews are lying about Hamass war crimes so they can steal more land.
Anyway, theyre always calling us anti-Semites, which is stupid because all Arabs are Semites (duh), so obviously Im not an anti-Semite, I just dont like Jews. Now dont get me wrong, Ive never actually been outside of the United States, much less to Palestine. My traveling consists of high school band trips to California and track meets on the other side of Ohio, but I owe it to the world to fight for the Palestinian (and Native American, and Black) cause. After all, I was born into a privileged white American family, and helping the oppressed relieves me of my guilt for being the product of white capitalist pigs. You see, I dont need to be in Palestine to feel the pain of displacement and apartheid, and neither do you. Join me in the fight for justice today.

(4,151 posts)Usually, the feelings you get are ones of optimism, hope, and yearning to make the world a better place. But here, all we get is screaming, bullying, intimidation, and in some cases, outright racism.
here we get outright murder :

I prefer the former to the latter.
How about you?
Israeli
(4,151 posts)One is a peaceful rally for hope whereas the other features intimidating screaming bullies and racists.
Have you ever attended a peace rally over here ?
First one I attended we lost Emil Grunzweig , the largest and most important of them all we lost Yitzhak Rabin .
Try marching with Gush Shalom , then you will see intimidating screaming bullies and racists .

(30,109 posts)I'm describing actual PeaceNow protesters & activists and then comparing them to the anti-Apartheid, anti-colonialist, 1-state, BDS activists.
I'm not describing rightwing reactions to those groups.
PeaceNow rallies are very dovish, full of hope and truly peaceful. As opposed to the pro-BDS rallies led by and consisting of angry, screaming, intolerant bullies and racists chanting "Palestine will be free from the River to the Sea".
If you ask me, it's the difference between a liberal/leftist rally and an extreme far right mob. And the reason is simple. PeaceNow is actually run by genuinely peaceful, liberal zionists. The BDS, anti-Apartheid anti-zionist 1-staters act like extreme right-wingers with a mob mentality, perhaps because there are so many extreme rightwingers and Hamas supporters within the movement.

(58,724 posts)It is spoofing rich white American college students who have no Israeli/Palestinian connection staging various "actions" at universities across the US because they have decided to embrace this particular cause for one reason or another.
Recursion
(56,582 posts)And the similar actions against South Africa did nothing, I tell you...
oberliner
(58,724 posts)Just speak of their actions with reverence and in hushed respectful tones.
Recursion
(56,582 posts)But, it is the same thing South Africa's defenders said 30 years ago.
aranthus
(3,385 posts)her parody is about the expensively educated dullards who know nothing about South Africa, haven't been to the Middle East, and yet enthusiastically buy into the lie that Israel/Palestine is the same thing as South Africa.
Recursion
(56,582 posts)For that matter so were a lot of anti-segregation protestors in the US. Still doesn't change their effectiveness, and it always makes the targets of the protest bitter, like this guy is.
aranthus
(3,385 posts)by putting words in my mouth and attacking motives. As for their effectiveness, that isn't what is being parodied. It's their signing on to the war against the Jewish state that is at issue.
Recursion
(56,582 posts)so it's not at all surprising that it does.
aranthus
(3,385 posts)That certainly will make Israel feel more isolated and threatened, but it won't bring a peaceful solution to the problem.
Recursion
(56,582 posts)Though, like in Israel, it took terrorism to get the leverage to start the process (Mandela started out blowing up white farms, after all).
I see no reason that this will be different.
shira
(30,109 posts)So how many are you willing to see die to make that 1-state solution happen?
Recursion
(56,582 posts)I'd prefer nobody die. 1-state full ROR majority rule is coming; it's up to the Israelis how rough the transition is for them. Offering something better than Hamas does would be a good start.
shira
(30,109 posts)Recursion
(56,582 posts)Given that, I'm "for" the transition being as peaceful as possible, and there being protections for the way of life and rights of the eventual Jewish minority. Arguing about two states is like mapping the iceberg the Titanic already hit; there's going to be one state, and my interest is that the transition be as peaceful as possible.
shira
(30,109 posts)...as they were back before the WW2 era, defenseless and relying on their host countries to be nice to them. Those days are over.
There's simply no way with a 1-state Palestinian majority there will be protections for a Jewish minority. Look around the mideast and you'll find that 99% of all Jews from surrounding Arab countries were ethnically cleansed. At best, they live under Jim Crow conditions.
It's not happening.
Recursion
(56,582 posts)I guess that's all there is to say about that. Particularly since that probably would bring about the kind of ethnic cleansing you're worried about, unlike engaging constructively.
shira
(30,109 posts)....Jews to slit their own throats by giving Hamas, Islamic Jihad and friends the keys to the car?
Are you truly not aware of the Hamas program for Jews? It can be summed up in one word: Genocide.
How can you expect the Jews to just let that happen?
Recursion
(56,582 posts)And, now that they have, they need to offer Palestinians something they will prefer to Hamas. I agree with you that it would be in the Israelis' best interest, I just don't see it happening, unfortunately.
Israeli
(4,151 posts)by the looks of Emily Schrader she fits right into the stereotype
maybe she should join a Gush Shalom march then spoof that for the american market , I'm sure it will get lots of laughs .
oberliner
(58,724 posts)That sort of defeats the idea behind the satire.

Tell me oberliner , what exactly are these students protesting ?
Now tell me what exactly are Peace Now and Gush Shalom protesting for ?
