By Nasser Abu Bakr - RAMALLAH (Palestinian Territories)
The Palestinian leadership on Tuesday blamed Israel for the death of a long-term prisoner with cancer, hiking tensions over a tinderbox issue closely followed on the Palestinian street.
The death on Tuesday morning of Maisara Abu Hamdiyeh, a 64-year-old prisoner from Hebron who had been suffering from throat cancer, sparked a welter of anger over Israel's refusal to release him early on compassionate grounds.
"The death of Maisara Abu Hamdiyeh shows the Israeli government's arrogance and intransigence over the prisoners," Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas told reporters at the start of a meeting of his Fatah movement in Ramallah.
"We tried to get him released for treatment but the Israeli government refused to let him out, which led to his death," Abbas said, with his spokesman laying the blame squarely on the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

We were surprised with the death of our brother prisoner, Abbas said. We attempted to have him released and take him for treatment, but the Israeli government refused to release him, which led to his death.
He was being treated by cancer specialists in Israel, where was Abbas going to take him for treatment exactly?
Edit - his request for early release was not refused, it was still being processed.

Abu Hamdiyeh was hospitalized after he fell unconscious, Palestinian minister of prisoners affairs Issa Qaraqe said Saturday. Qaraqe said Abu Hamdiyeh's cancer spread because he did not receive adequate treatment from Israeli prison authorities.

(16,342 posts)JERUSALEM Palestinian prisoners rioted Tuesday following news of a fellow inmates death of cancer, and Israeli prison guards fired tear gas to quell the disturbances, an Israeli official said.
Palestinian officials said Israel was responsible for the death of Maysara Abu Hamdiyeh, charging medical negligence. The 64-year-old was serving a life sentence for his role in a foiled attempt to bomb a busy cafe in Jerusalem in 2002.
As news of Abu Hamdiyehs death spread, Palestinian prisoners in several jails began banging on their cell doors and hurling objects. Later, protests spread to Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank.
Prisons Authority spokeswoman Sivan Weizman said three prisoners and six guards were evacuated for medical treatment after inhaling tear gas.
She said Abu Hamdiyeh was treated well by Israeli specialists and died in a hospital in Beersheba.
