Arabs were not in Israel before the Jewish people, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu asserted early Thursday morning before the Knesset vote on the referendum bill.
The bill passed in its first reading with 66 MKs in favor and 45 opposed. The legislation reinforces existing law by upgrading it to a Basic Law, which means it would have constitutional status in the eyes of the Supreme Court. The current law requires a referendum on any concession of sovereign territory, in a peace treaty or as a unilateral move. Sovereign territory does not include Judea and Samaria, but it includes all of Jerusalem and any land swaps.
During the debate, MK Mordechai Yogev (Bayit Yehudi) said the Land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel, and MK Jamal Zahalka (Balad) responded: We [Arabs] were here before you and well be here after you.
In an unusual move, Netanyahu asked to take the podium and said to Zahalka: The first part isnt true, and the second wont be.

(2,730 posts)evidence otherwise, I have to agree with Netanyahu. The Jews had been a conquered people, ever since the fall of Ancient Israel. According to History, it was originally the land of Cannaan. The Arabs came from the Arabian Peninsula, and conquered the Jews also. Before that, it was the Hittites,Assyrians, Babylonians,Persians, Greeks and Romans all had a hand in conquering the Jews. That is why they are spread out all over the World. The Jews fought among themselves also. So, this is the second time I agree with Netanyahu.

(768 posts)By that logic, virtually everyone on the planet can claim the right to invade and colonize Egypt, since it was the gateway for the great migration out of Africa 35,000 years ago. So all of our ancestors lived there at some stage. By the same logic Egypt could lay claim to Israel, because they were there first.
And there is no doubt about the fact that the demographics of Israel today represent the fruits of a European colonial effort. A tiny native Jewish population stretching back to ancient times is no more compelling reason to believe the land belongs to European Jews than Egypt's Coptic population is reason to believe Egypt belongs to the world's several billion Christians.
Its a fucking stupid argument, IMO
