The militant Islamic group Hamas that rules Gaza should halt all executions because they are imposed without fair trial, the U.N.'s top human rights official said Wednesday.
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said the Gaza authorities must follow international human rights law when seeking to impose the death penalty.
"One absolute requirement is that the death penalty can only be imposed after a fair trial. This is currently not possible in Gaza, neither legally nor practically," Pillay said in a statement.
She also has concerns about alleged ill-treatment and torture during interrogations of people who were later sentenced to death.

They wouldn't know an international law if they walked into one.
What a joke.

(9,688 posts)"Internet censorship and spying on the activities of Palestinians is strongly embraced by security-obsessed authorities. But the Hamas government in Gaza has gone off the deep end. Young men accuse it of using prostitutes to entrap them for ethical charges.
Gaza Palestinian authorities in Ramallah and Gaza aggressively target dissidents. It seems theres no limit to the intrusive policies implemented to suppress freedoms.
In Ramallah, a young man was thrown in jail simply for liking an article on Facebook critical of resuming Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and sharing a picture calling for the overturn of the Oslo Accords.
The behavior of the government in Gaza is worse, not because its repression is more brutal than the Palestinian Authoritys in Ramallah, but because its leader pays lip service to freedom and curses its political adversary, even though he plays the same role faithfully."

(12,283 posts)this is what theorcatic govts are all about....(the real ones). Only the fools were surprised that hamas took the elections and probably the same fools are still surprised that hamas is ever slow slowly tightening their grip...
and those fools probably still support hamas either directly of indirectly as "self-determination", the way to freedom, and all those others words that mean nothing in the real world or real oppression.
thrown in jail for "liking"....i'm sure the kid is feeling the "love" from the left wing progressives as they support him and the better hamas govt, that tossed him there.
but hey...at least hamas and the kid have a genetic link, so its not all bad
