The IDF uncovered a massive Hamas attack tunnel leading from Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, into Israel, complete with an electrical supply and phone lines, it announced Sunday.
The tunnel was dug in order to either kidnap civilians and soldiers, or to infiltrate the community and carry out an atrocity in it, the army believes.
The tunnel was over 1.7 kilometers in length and represents a grave attempt by Palestinian terrorists to perpetrate an attack, army sources added.
It took Hamas over a year to complete, and is wide enough inside to allow people to stand fully upright as they travel along it. The tunnel is buried some 20 meters underground as it crosses the Israel - Gaza border.

The tunnel was constructed using approximately 24,000 Israeli concrete slabs which the IDF had permitted into Gaza to ease the crisis in civilian construction sector, Southern Command chief Maj.-Gen. Sami Turgeman said.

(14,851 posts)Ein Hashlosha: Israel on Sunday froze the shipment of building materials into Gaza after discovering a sophisticated "terror tunnel" into the Jewish state from the Palestinian territory, a defence official said.
"Due to security reasons, (the army) decided to stop for now the transfer of building materials into Gaza," Guy Inbar told AFP.
Inbar, spokesman for the Israeli defence ministry unit responsible for civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories, did not say how long the ban would remain in force.
Last month, Israel permitted cement and steel deliveries into the Gaza Strip for use by the private sector for the first time since 2007.
