(Reuters) - Israel said on Thursday it would press ahead with plans to build in existing Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, in an apparent bid to appease hardliners opposed to peace talks with the Palestinians.
Local media said new building tenders could be announced next week, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in particular seeks to douse opposition from right-wingers in his government to a planned release of Palestinian prisoners.
"In accordance with understandings reached on the eve of the restart of peace talks with the Palestinians, in the coming months Israel will continue to announce it will build in settlement blocs and in Jerusalem," part of the statement by the unnamed official said.
"Both the Americans and the Palestinians have been aware of these understandings," the statement added.

(6,829 posts)last time israel voted, many voted for the parties currently in coalition.
What needs to happen is reform of knesset to break the power of the small religious parties, a broader coalition that leaves them out of the majority. Instead a broad secular coalition is needed, one that realizes expanding the settlements will not help the situation.
If I had my way Israel would pull out of most of the west bank, with the exception of the old city of Jerusalem, unilaterally. The Palestinians would then have the country they want, free from Israel occupation.
That would not mean that they would have free and unfettered access in to Israel. If Israel chose to close off its western border with Palestine, that would be its prerogative.

(9,688 posts)the ongoing occupation, siege, and annexation of Palestinian land, so you can in the meantime blame it all on the (terrorist/nazi/genocidal/etc) victim, is that the ongoing Nakba not only exists but exists at an accelerating pace. And the Palestinian victims are powerless to stop it.
So you can have your meaningless feel-good prescriptions of how the Jewish State of Israel "should" proceed, and you can have your meaningless opinions re. who is "for" and who is "against" your fantasy "two state solution", all the while feeling smug about being a winner.
