A Presbyterian Church USA decision to divest from three companies that profit from the Israeli occupation made headlines in nearly all mainstream media outlets in the United States on Saturday.
In contrast to previous American divestment moves, the Presbyterian decision was seen as consequential and significant by newspaper and other news editors across the country. The NY Times and most other major outlets reported on the vote, both ahead of time and once it passed. J Street, the Reform movement and other mainstream American Jewish organizations lobbied within the church against the divestment move.
In a close vote Friday night, the churchs general assembly voted to divest from Caterpillar, Motorola and Hewlett Packard. It follows a similar vote earlier by the Methodist Church, which divested from G4S, a security company that performs contract work in Israeli military prisons in the West Bank.
