Op-ed: Israel of 2014 is a nation state for rich Jews, high-tech workers and generals' children. So dont talk to us about Zionism.
Berlin protest's organizer
Published: 10.15.14, 00:12
The Israelis emigrating to Berlin have been called many things in the past week: Weaklings, Nazis, Holocaust deniers and degraders.
Finance Minister Yair Lapid said that we were "anti-Zionist," that we were leaving Israel for cheaper pudding and selling our values. Others say that Israel is clearly too expensive, but that we must stay here and fight from within for God's little acre that our nation has obtained.
Three years ago, the Israeli society united for a real fight, informing its elected representatives that something isn't working and needs to be fixed. I took to the streets too and participated in the protests, because Israel is my country and Hebrew is my language, and with all honesty I would rather live in Tel Aviv than in Berlin.
But that protest didn't work. The government changed, but the housing and food prices only soared. I am telling you straightforwardly, there is no point in waiting for elections. There is no point in sticking posts on politicians' walls and "liking" different protests on Facebook in an attempt to influence them. The people may be replaced in elections, the parties may change their names, but the politicians know very well who they work for and it not for us.

Then don't write an op-ed piece for a major newspaper?

(58,724 posts)It's not in the print edition - just online.
Like how Times of Israel publishes a bunch of ridiculous anonymous rants from bloggers.
I'm also not sure what claims he is making that might be true or false. He mostly just repeatedly says he is 25 years old and doesn't know anything.
As poorly written as the worst DU posts.

(30,099 posts)He/she made claims against the state, and specific to the inability to afford purchasing an apartment.
I suppose all those thousands upon thousands of protesters were just out in the streets for
entertainment purposes he spoke of. Also, the lack of trust that he would be targeted for his opinions if identified,
considering your response, he/she was correct in remaining anonymous.
You crack me up.

For those that dont :
http://972mag.com/the-israeli-negotiator-who-thinks-the-two-state-solution-is-still-possible/68259/
Here is what he has to say :....
Time is on our side is the hollow mantra of Naftali Bennett and Uri Ariel of Habayit Hayehudi, along with their brothers in Likud, Yisrael Beiteinu and Yesh Atid. The leftists are tired Zionists, they claim, while appropriating the Zionist project for their messianic ideology. Well get the world used to our caprices, they tell anyone who wonders where theyre heading.
But the Jewish year 5775 is beginning and refusing to get used to anything. Some 1.5 million Israelis ushered in the new year at meals funded by donations from good people. The number of Israelis in the cycle of poverty grows each year; most of the poor work.
The gaps are increasing, but the messianic brothers have a solution: Join us in the welfare state in the West Bank. We doubled the budgets for Judea and Samaria, boasts the previous finance minister, the embodiment of the vision of socialist Zionism.
The frequent rounds of violence take their toll in blood and damage to the economy. Theyre responsible for budget cuts in both primary and higher education, and undermine the welfare and health services. This mainly affects poorer people, of course. While the Jewish brothers are once again proposing that we occupy Gaza, the education minister is explaining that there was a war and it wouldnt be right to curtail the vision of Greater Israel.
Nor is the international community getting used to anything. Israels standing continues to suffer, especially among those closest to us, the United States and Western Europe. The disgust at our continued domination of another nation is eroding cultural, economic and scientific ties with the rest of the world.
The United States is undergoing demographic changes, as well as a change in priorities. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the Americanologist doesnt realize how U.S. support is slipping through his fingers. Others, drunk on imaginary power, promise us that the world wont move without that Israeli app Waze. Particles wont accelerate without Jewish genius.
The Jewish brothers who continue to put Jewish before democratic refuse to notice North American Jews reservations about Israel. They eschew the two-state idea, repudiate liberalism, sanctify power and practice discrimination.
Even united Jerusalem is not cooperating with the security hawks. In our eternal capital the nationalist and religious tensions are deepening, and violence is increasing. The citys poverty on both sides of the Green Line puts most of its children, both Jewish and Arab, below the poverty line. Most of its residents are anti-Zionists.
Meanwhile, many young Israelis have stopped believing that time is on the side of messianic Zionism. The cost of living, reserve duty and mainly the absence of faith in government policy are pushing them to a future on the other side of the ocean. No, they arent tired. The residents of the western Negev near Gaza, a stronghold of genuine Zionism, arent spoiled, as some people accuse them of being.
They simply understand that an honest attempt at achieving peace doesnt mean rejecting the two-state idea, ostracizing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, torpedoing any attempt to include Hamas in the diplomatic process and continuing unbridled construction in the West Bank. They understand the real price, both economic and moral, in the refusal to separate ourselves from the Palestinians.
Time remains indifferent and does not sanctify the artificial status quo. Waiting around the corner isnt a binational state, but one state whose characteristics are far from any divine or other promise. Its a state that even a messiah wouldnt be able to cleanse.

(111,359 posts)I don't think the leaders expected the world's Jews to want to move there. It was too small a country for that. Even colonizing the West Bank hasn't done a lot to improve housing prospects there. Were I young and starting out, I'd move, too, just the way I left Boston for many of the same reasons.
I will always love that city. I'll probably never go back there because I'd want to stay. I just couldn't afford to stay there years ago so I left.
And no, it's not about the pudding. It's about banks and speculators and the governments that work for them and not for working people.
