Kahlon to enlist Ethiopian Israeli Tsega Melaku for Koolanu
MMoshe Kahlon is expected to enlist Tsega Melaku, the Ethiopian Israeli woman who managed the Israel Broadcasting Authority's Reshet A, to his Koolanu party.
Melaku, who managed Reshet A for three years before becoming an editor at Reka, the Kol Israel Foreign Language channel, will reportedly take the number three slot in the party, after Kahlon and Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant, the former head of OC Southern command pegged for the number two slot on Thursday.
Melaku would not be the first Ethiopian woman in the Knesset--Yesh Atid's MK Penina TamnuShata took that honor in the last election. Another Ethiopian-born MK, Shimon Solomon, also ran with Yesh Atid. Yesh Atid has not finalized its list for the upcoming election, but given their party's drop in the polls from 19 to around 10, its Ehtiopian MKs may not make it back. In the 2013 list, they held the 14th and 12th slots respectively.
Melaku's high slot on the Koolanu list could make her a contender to become Israel's first Ethiopian-born minister.
