El-Sissi leading a Churchillian fight against Hamas

It’s not yet clear quite how an Egyptian court’s decision Saturday to define Hamas, in its entirety, as a terror group will play out. Hitherto, only the organization’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was defined as such, but the new ruling widens the definition to include the political branch. Does this mean that from here on out Egypt will completely ban Hamas, cutting all ties to the group including those involving Cairo’s own intelligence agencies?

What can be said with a high degree of certainty, especially in light of the almost hysterical response to the ruling in the Gaza Strip, is that on a symbolic level this is Cairo’s declaration of war on Hamas. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is proving that there is only one leader in the Middle East who can be compared to Winston Churchill, and he sits in Cairo.

With Sissi, it’s not just talk. It’s action too. He has, memorably, now made a series of speeches calling for a revolution in Islamic thought, to shift the emphasis away from violence and to create a more humane Islam. He has declared war upon radical Islam wherever it may be — not only upon the Islamic State and its affiliates, who have attacked Egyptians in Libya and Egypt proper, but on the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates as well.

Many months ago, the president set out on a wide-scale military operation in the Sinai Peninsula that his associates have assessed will last two to three years. During this period, he has said, Egypt will pay a price, perhaps a heavy one, but there is no choice and no escape from carrying it out.

I mean I've seen you say you don't support Likud, but, well... Haven' really seen any opposition to the government's policies under likud's leadership. Which is kind of the important thing.

Can you give some examples?

After violently overthrowing the democratically-elected government of egypt, he set about a purge of not just the Muslim Brotherhood, but all opposition parties. This resulted in the killing of over two thousand activists, demonstrators, and voters in Cairo alone, and over 4,000 around the rest of Egypt. He then brought the deposed president of Egypt to trial on charges of murder, owing to five protesters who had been killed by police. Morsi was locked in a sound-proof box during the trial, and was not allowed to hear the case against him nor to mount a defense. Sisi "abandoned" his military position to run for president, and got nearly 90% of the vote - probably due to a combination of his governors controlling the handling of votes, and his demonstration of willingness to kill those who opposed him. The presidency thus secured, he then ordered trials for over a thousand Egyptians, charging them with terrorism and treason for their political affiliation with Sisi's opponents - Not just the Muslim Brotherhood, but a number of other opposition and left-wing groups as well. They were tried en masse, and interestingly, in absentia. Every one was sentenced to death.l Five hundred of these sentences were commuted after the US expressed some dismay over the farce. Meanwhile a large number of reporters, including several Americans and Europeans were being held on charges of terrorism and treason for reporting on the coup - both charges carry the death penalty. Some of them were tortured.

But you know he's not a fan of hamas, so he's just like Winston Churchill, I guess.

David, if you're trying to lionize this animal... don't.

look at the link provided and you will see that al-Sissi is indeed a "churchillian" type of leader.

After reading the link you may wish to describe the Israeli government of adopting Churchillian tactics.

The Jews, by contrast, Churchill regarded as a “sinister confederacy… for the overthrow of civilization.” In his book ‘Great Contemporaries,’ published in 1937, Churchill describes Hitler as “a highly competent, cool, well-informed functionary with an agreeable manner.” In the same book he savagely attacks Leon Trotsky. ‘What was wrong with Trotsky?’ He asked rhetorically. “He was still a Jew.” Churchill replied, “nothing could get over that.”

No wonder the Times of Israel is fawning there.
