Related: About this forumMore Jews From Ukraine Are Escaping to Israel
KIEV Tatyana Orul would have moved to Israel years ago if not for her job as a television journalist in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, which interested her too much to give up.
But when bombs started falling next to her house last year, she reconsidered. The war between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatist forces in the region had also put her husband out of a job. The airport where he worked now lies in ruins.
Last month, at a hotel in the Ukrainian capital, Orul and her husband waited with packed bags for the plane that would take them the next morning to Israel to begin a new life. She would leave behind her newly married son; Orul said Ukrainian law prohibits newly married couples from emigrating.

I know that drives people crazy , so a little strange hearing that sentiment on a Democratic Party website ( the party of the Jewish Americans) such as DU .Usually extremist right wing express that.

(14,851 posts)What gives with this ugliness ?..Usually non Palestinians or non Muslims expressing that kind of sentiment have other motives.
Usually find that sentiment on David Duke or Rense or extremist right wing sites.
So surprising to see it on a Democratic Party supporting website the traditional party of Jewish Americans.
So I'll spell it out for you:
Jews have been in Danger for 1000s of years and is the reason Israel was created as a safe haven. These Jews are settling in Ramle ...within Israel .
Please let's not get this ugly sentiment being expressed now on DU by those not even a part of this conflict , but show their motivation for making this other people's struggle their one and own and primary struggle.
It was seen in this thread too ...but lucky it got hidden.

Lots of contenders on other threads, though, I would agree.

(90,061 posts)Nobody goes out of their way to say bad things about Arabs here, do they? I submit that if you are going to indulge in these sorts of name calling contests, you need to suck it up, get some of that "Sabra Mystique" going, and accept that people are going to get annoyed and say unpleasant things in return.
It is always the loudest and most vituperative hasbaristas who also get the most sanctimonious when the favor is returned.

(58,724 posts)Nevertheless, it was a Jew who exported the new kind of drinking establishment to Europe, opening the first in Livorno, Italy in 1632. In 1650, a Lebanese known as Jacob the Jew founded the first English coffeehouse in Oxford. Sephardic Jews, many of whom also became coffee traders, soon joined with Armenian and Greek merchants to bring the coffeehouse to the Netherlands and France. But the going wasnt always smooth: Verona authorities forbade Jews from having women of any religion in their coffeehouses. Meanwhile, in post-medieval Germany, authorities attempted to restrict the Jewish coffee trade altogether, according to the late Israeli historian Robert Liberles, because they feared the new beverage threatened their flourishing beer industry. My people must drink beer, proclaimed Frederick the Great.

Interesting article by the way if you are into the history of coffee.

And arguments about who invented stuff tend to degrade really fast.

I thought coffee maybe could serve as an area of consensus among Jews and Muslims, Israelis and Palestinians, Zionists and anti-Zionists, religious fundamentalists and atheists, etc.

I would argue that DU allows for a lot more leeway for folks to engage in ugly attacks on Zionists than their opposite number.
But sanctimony is definitely present in all corners - no argument from me on that score.
You have an argument.
I would say that enforcement of rules against ugliness is irregular at best, as one would expect with a jury system, and obsessing about the unfairness of it all is most unlikely to resonate except with people who already agree with you.

(12,606 posts)Seeing how these refugees can at least flee to Israel, and potentially ransack the West Bank in due time, it is a fair question.
The Palestinians refugees the world over are not so lucky that they can return home to their lands.

Jews with their own colonized Palestinian slaves? This is ugly bigotry that has no business being on DU.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It's an accurate statement.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I would like the see the poster explain this comment and trust that DUers will press him/her to do so.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Israel REFUSES to recognize Palestine, and as more Jews head to Israel, the more they push the previously agreed upon Israel/Palestine borders, effectively turning Palestine into ghettos. It may HAVE started as a safe haven for Jews in danger, but currently it's responsible for a LOT of turmoil in the middle east.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Political rhetoric meant to spark deeper examination of the issue; it is difficult for some to deal with the realities of this topic. Censorship does nothing, however, to enhance debate and discussion.
