LGBT
Related: About this forumI've posted a bunch of photos from Anchorage's Gay Pride Parade and Pridefest
which was yesterday at my website. Turnout was great, and a fun time was had by all. Some of you might remember that Anchorage has been having some difficulties getting equal rights for LGBT people codified into our city ordinances, but more and more support is building. I think it's only a matter of time until common sense and compassion win out over the religious nuts that we unfortunately have here in our fair city.

We really love the Pride parade every year, even though my husband and I are straight. It's obvious gay people have the best parties and parades.

And I know you probably weren't aware, but Alaska Natives of the West and North prefer to be called either Yup'ik or Inupiaq. Eskimo verges on being a racist term. It's still used and nobody gets REALLY pissed, but they prefer the other designations.

(69,059 posts)Yeah, I usually remember to say Inuit instead of Eskimo, but that's not the name of the song.
I don't think I've ever heard Yup'ik or Inupiaq before.

(46,436 posts)In fact, we don't see her much at all these days, much to everyone's relief. She's kind of worn out her novelty.
You're right, there was a big crowd along the parade route and at the party in the park. Most people here are really pretty tolerant; we just have a certain religious faction that stands in the way of the equal rights. At least, they don't come out to protest the Pridefest or anything.
If you're at all interested in what goes on here with regard to LGBT rights, check out Mel Green's very excellent blog, Bent Alaska. http://www.bentalaska.com/ She is awesome.
