The same-sex union divide
Pastor Kenneth Wheeler once struggled on the issue of same-sex marriage. And that's understandable. Wheeler grew up in a conservative religious household in the Bible Belt where being gay was considered a sin.
Today, Wheeler not only accepts gays and lesbians, he has presided over their civil unions.
"Over the years, I've been asked to bless animals and motorcycles. If I can bless family pets and inanimate objects, then who am I to stand in the way of a gay or lesbian couple in a committed, loving relationship?" said Wheeler, pastor of Cross Lutheran Church, 1821 N. 16th St.
Wheeler's journey did not happen overnight. It wasn't until he came across a conservative couple whose son told them that he was gay that he started to see things differently.
"When he told his parents that he was gay and he wanted to know if they would accept him, they didn't hesitate. They told him that they loved him and that he was still their son," Wheeler said. "I asked myself, 'Would I have the same compassion if my son approached me the same way?' "
