Lifetime (TV for women...and gay men) is showing an adaptation of Steel Magnolias with the lead cast being African-American. I am very curious how it will be. I loved the original.
The primary cast:
Queen Latifah ... M'Lynn
Alfre Woodard ... Ouiser
Phylicia Rashad ... Clairee
Jill Scott ... Truvy
Adepero Oduye ... Annelle
Condola Rashad ... Shelby

(1,983 posts)I know there a lot of white women that are up set about the remake and as an AA female I don't blame them.I do wish they would have renamed it something different.
From what I read the director was white.

(111,275 posts)So thank ya ma'am, this honky will be watching.
It will be fascinating to see if Condola Rashad can make the Shelby character a little less grating than Roberts did.
I'm glad it's the same script and the same title. I imagine some of the changes are going to be wonderful.
Good stories should stand on their own no matter who is playing the characters. This one likely will through almost as many variations as "Pride and Prejudice" has had through the years.
The different flavor an all black cast will add will be interesting to see.

Ahh well, this white woman can't wait to see it.
What a stupid way to go through life, being so possessive and bigoted.

(102,292 posts)I have a hard time moving past the originals... I'm afraid I've seen it too many times and that version isn't all that old to begin with (well, from MY perspective---LOL)
I'm sure it will be good, but I'm not sure I'm going to watch. Too many other options on Sunday, anyway between Homeland, Dexter, Hell on Wheels, The Good Wife, Revenge... and several others I'm forgetting. Seems Sundays are the only days worth tuning in, any more.

(11,304 posts)to stand on its own. Acting is acting. I would love to see a mix of the original and this cast together. I bet it would be very fun.

(3,310 posts)I loved the first movie and I love every one of the new cast, especially Alfre Woodard, Queen Latifah, and Jill Scott. A good story is a good story and a good cast will retell it beautifully in their own way.
