Anti-gay-marriage campaign: Launched with a false story
A proven strategy, used to defeat statewide initiatives and referendums, was once defined by a growling, roguish U.S. Senate aide and friend named Jerry Eller: "Create chaos and doubt, then conquer."
If doubts are planted in voters' heads, they will vote "no" . . . even if those doubts are false and have no basis in fact.
The late-starting campaign to defeat same-sex marriage in Washington is headed down that path. The tipoff came in two videos put up by Preserve Marriage Washington, a harbinger of TV commercials to come.
The claim is that opponents of "redefinition of marriage" will face persecution if Referendum 74 is passed. Or as Catholic Bishop Joseph Tyson of Yakima put it in a pastoral letter, "A law touted as a victory for civil rights and equality is actually a loss of civil rights and equality for the most vulnerable among us."
