being transgender and being a parent

from Offbeat Mama

One of the biggest challenges of being transgender is raising children...the struggles of our Trans brothers and sisters many times goes unnoticed in the wake of all the other issues swirling around gender transition....the website Offbeat Mama was created for parents form all kinds of families...and has wonderful stories form real life parents (mama's and papa's) of all kinds....

I began transition late in life and I have a twenty something daughter and my partner and I have a teen relative of his who has been living with us for sometime now.

I ran across the site and found this article written by a transwoman with elementary children....it is poignant, sad and joyous all at the same time...

"Honey, I volunteered for your school's reading celebration next week. I know that you're a little nervous about me coming to your school, so I wanted to tell you ahead of time in case you wanted to talk about it," I said to my seven-year-old daughter, P., as I tucked her in to bed one night. Volunteering at her child's school might not be much of a monumental event for most Moms. For this Mom, though, it's huge.

Biologically speaking, I am not "Mommy;" I'm Daddy. But I transitioned a couple of years ago, and slowly the kids are getting used to having two Mommies. The change in terms of job, friends, and family was easy, as these sorts of things go. No one knows that I transitioned unless I tell them — I blend in.
