Bid adieu to Georgia’s anti-gay Saxby Chambliss

Well glory be. U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, one in a long line of anti-gay pols in Georgia, won’t seek a third term. Trouble with that is the long line of anti-gay pols in the state who will fight, kick, scratch and claw to replace him.

Chambliss has opposed the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” tried to explain away gay death threats from a staffer as free speech and scored 15 out of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s recent Congressional Scorecard. So LGBT activists in the state won’t shed a tear at his departure.

But the Republicans expected to battle it out in a primary ahead of the 2014 election show that Chambliss’ anti-gay extremism is likely to get replaced by, well, more anti-gay extremism. Current members of Georgia’s Congressional delegation, including Phil Gingrey, Tom Graves, Paul Broun and Tom Price, all score horribly low on support for even the most basic of LGBT issues.

And then there’s Karen Handel, who is pondering her own sleazy, anti-gay race for the seat.
