I'm acquainted with several gays who've indicated that they realized at an early age that they were "different", but not exactly how they were different until they were in middle school or their early teens. The mother of the child in this article states that Coy insisted she was a girl from the time she could talk. I intend no offense in asking this question: how is this possible?
From the article:
Coy Mathis wears girls' clothing and students and staff used the female pronouns when referring to her. But Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 administrators decided over winter break that the child should use the boys bathroom, or the staff restroom or one in the school nurse's office.
The family will appear at a press conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday on the west steps of the State Capitol to announce the filing of the complaint.
"It's important for us to talk about this, because a lot of people have been so afraid to be their true selves for so long," Kathryn Mathis said. "They've know from very young children who they are, but were afraid to tell. We want to help create a society where it's OK to be who you are."
She said that as soon as Coy began to talk, she insisted that she was a girl, not a boy.

(115,677 posts)Well, she could do the same as other girls and simply use a stall. As a female, I never flashed my genitals at anyone in the bathroom, or ever had it done. I do not understand what impact this would have. I live with a man, have used bathrooms that men have and have never felt impacted by the fact a male genital had been in the same place I was. I really don't get this.
And good for her and her parents for standing up for her.

That is reality.

(100,079 posts)I saw this posted on a number of sites - nothing but hateful, bigoted, stupid crap being spewed from people who are completely oblivious to transgender issues. Wow. I bet maybe three of the comments were from people who knew what they were talking about.

(6,036 posts)Gender is understood by children by two years of age. By this time most of us already have a sense of being male, female or some combination. So it's not surprising to see transgender identification as early as 2years of age. AFAIK our sexual preference doesn't become apparent until we are into our tween years.
