Matthew Shepard's mom reacts to DOMA

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/26/matthew-shepard-mom-doma_n_3504800.html?utm_hp_ref=gay-voices

"There had been a [news] story about same-sex marriage and he was debating it with me," Judy Shepard told People magazine. "He asked me if I thought gay couples would ever be allowed to get married and he wasn't at all optimistic it would happen. He was in a mindset of, 'People are never going to accept us or understand us.' It was a much different world then. There was activism happening, yes. And we were moving on from the AIDS pandemic. But ignorance and the fear out there was its own pandemic. For Matthew, it was a very secret world still."

"I wish he'd been here to see it," she added. "This case warms my heart, to think that his dream is still coming true."

there are many such sad stories.

Many couples still alive lost their spouses and were left without protections that other couples have. Many fought for their children and lost, many fought to be in hospital rooms. The history of the world is a mean one.

I know they would all, as are we all, be very happy indeed to see the change coming.

David died in 2006. I had to fight his family in court for what was mine (literally mine). If we had been married, my troubles would not have happened.

But at least she has a reason for optimism now.
