(53,939 posts)The further toward center (Pope), the further to the left (Putin (ETA: actually it is more correct to say Russia)). They exemplify why gay rights has taken such a long-ass time and why we have so much more to overcome because along with those "people," we have the right-wing to deal with as well.

(53,939 posts)You just have to know which way the wind is blowing. Do you remember the Hagel nomination? The fact that so-called democrats/liberals/progressives were defending a Republican appointee was bad enough, but when homophobia was brought up, the attacks were relentless. Now, I expected the defense of Hagel from the Obama "rah-rah" crowd, but they really aren't that prominent, despite the belief of some. But when others, who railed against Obama on just about every other fucking issue started cheering the nomination, that was a bit of cold water to the face.

Simply put, if they loved us, there would be no laws.
