Russia: MP calls for law allowing gays to be whipped in public squares

Speaking to the Chita news agency on Thursday, Mr Mikhailov linked gay people to paedophiles and suggested they should be whipped in public squares by “marines”.

He described homosexuality as a “common shame”.

Referencing a doctor, who criticised the decision of several European countries to legalise marriage rights for same-sex couples, Mr Mikhailov praised the doctor and reportedly said: “We have to deal with such things”. He added that his province should adopt a law in which the marines have the right to flog the “asses” of gay people.

“In Russia for many centuries the ass was used for educational purposes and not for love entertainment. So we should use it according to its intended purpose,” the MP said.

Wasnt there some DU members claiming that America has a worse human-rights rating than Russia? This turn of events in russia isnt a suprise- totalitarian right wing governments often outlaw and demonize minority members of their own population. This is how right wing extremism gets things done through-out most of the world. Our teabaggers want the same sort of repressive state control of the private lives of American citizens, along with a heavy dose of local NRA-approved warlord rule.
We have won some freedoms lately, but it can all be reversed if we allow America's Taliban (teabaggers) to gain anymore political power. Every freedom-loving American should think of characters like this and his support of public torture for LGBT individuals, whenever they see or hear a teabagger.

He is a member of A Just Russia Party, which is a "socialist" party. Sadly, the entire political spectrum from communists to liberals to conservatives to nationalists is united in its anti-homosexuality standpoint. It is associated with the West, which is of course extremely unpopular in Russia. The gay community is Russia is laboring under very adverse conditions, and I respect that. They will face a difficult course in emerging as a distinctly Russian force, integrated with the country's politics.
