Fortunately for us, these colors don't run!

(9,267 posts)On DU I mainly stay to the religion forums (as you well know ) but I come here from time to time and there has been outrage here about the Russian law since the moment it was passed. People have been screaming in outrage about this for a long time!
I think this attempt to dismiss our outrage about this law is nothing more than a derailing tactic by people who can't accept that we don't care about their pet issue. Its all about them.
I oppose these hate filled laws no matter where they occur. Russia, Jamaica, Afghanistan, or even here in America. To me, there is no more pressing issue than that of equal rights.

(53,823 posts)It is also a huge slap in our faces that we are told what we can and cannot find offensive to us! I haven't said jack-shit about Snowden or his fleeing to Russia. I stayed out of it, so do I get a pass? Are some using Snowden's new home and our concerns as a way to "attack" Russia? Oh fuck yes! In reality, most are simply outraged at Russia sliding backward, and with it being the host of the Olympics, it makes it that much more important to discuss. If the Olympics were being held in Iran, some of this would also come out, but not like this because Iran has long been a homophobic country with gruesome laws in regards to our community (death penalty) where as Russia is making a fucking production out of this! I guarantee that some of those opposing a boycott (or even the consideration of one) or complaining about the gays "whining" about our rights, would change their tune if it were another country (wink, wink)...then it would be a free-for-all!

(53,823 posts)Oh, wait! Have we been given permission to discuss this topic and be angry that this is having to happen?

93. Fiew points from a Russian:
Okay, that little discussion you have there is quite amusing. Actually, I think the fine (not jail) for promoting homosexual lifestyle to minors (age < 18) is not a big deal. And majority of Russians would fully agree with me. This law is quite benign and doesn't deserve a tiny fraction of the attention it has.
So, what I think. Go on. Boycott the Olympics, try to set up an alternative games somewhere and invite only Gay friendly nations, dump "Russian vodka" and so on. Good luck, I'm pretty sure you haven't a chance to affect real life policies in the offline world, but if you succeed, even better. I think, that would benefit Russia and make it a better place eventually.
Good luck and have fun
