NYPD: 2 Gay Men Attacked Outside Movie Theater In Chelsea
Police Seek Gang Of 6; Incident Being Treated As Yet Another Hate Crime

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — What was supposed to be a pleasant movie night turned into a violent attack and beating for a gay couple in Chelsea.

As CBS 2’s Jessica Schneider reported, police on Wednesday were searching for several men in the attack, which took place around midnight Tuesday night, shortly after the couple left the Chelsea Bowtie Cinemas on 23rd Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues.

The two victims were holding hands as they turned onto 24th Street, when they were approached by two other men who yelled anti-gay slurs, according to police. The victims, 27 and 53, were then attacked by the two men, as well as four others who joined in.

“I am appalled by reports that two men were senselessly beaten in Chelsea simply because they were perceived to be gay,” City Council Speaker and candidate for mayor Christine Quinn said. “The cowardly individuals who committed this crime do not represent New Yorkers and our community will not be cowed by such violence. New York City’s greatest strength is our diversity, and we will not stand for attacks against anyone, for any reason.”

I think we are both correct.

'With age, comes wisdom', as the expression goes. When you and/or your friends have been targeted for homophobic hatred during the course of your life/lives, you generally trust your instincts as to, when you see someone coming your way, do you immediately cross the street and walk on the opposite side, crossing back if you see them also crossing to the opposite side, maybe even running away as fast as possible? The majority of people mind their own business, thankfully.
