Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko today compared gays to drunks and drug addicts, in attempt to allay concerns about the 2014 Winter Olympics being held in Sochi, Russia.

Well then, I feel so much better now! When does rehab start?

Mutko was responding to growing international opposition to Russia’s draconian new anti-gay “propaganda” law. The law could possibly used to throw Olympic athletes, visitors and media in jail for the simple act of wearing a rainbow pin, or even holding their legally-wed spouse’s hand in public.

As usual, Mutko made an even bigger mess of things. (Mutko isn’t exactly the brightest member of Putin’s cabinet.)

"Vitaly Mutko" is Russian for "Sarah Palin", who claims she can see the Motherland from her front porch.

“We want to protect our young generation, whose psyche has not been formed,” Mutko said at Luzhniki Stadium on the last day of the championships, which began August 10. “We want to protect them against the propaganda of drunkenness, drugs and non-traditional sexual relations. When they grow up and become adults, they have to define what they want for themselves.”

From what we can witness already, something has gone wickedly amiss with that theory, Mutko. Unless you really wanted your youths to grow up to be vicious, bigoted, jackbooted thugs.

But of course.... None of the Olympic Committees will do 1 thing, nor will the IOC, nor will any government.

4. Thats the problem

Many of those that are rationalizing Russia's behavior are people that claim to support LGBT causes (marriage equality, etc) but the moment the LGBT community is in need of help that requires anyone to make a change that might effect others they rationalize away their inaction. Bigotry by privilege if you will.

While I certainly can't speak for others, I knew exactly what I was starting at about 3 years old. I couldn't explain it or give a name to it, but I knew. Mr. Mutko can spare me the "it's for the children" bullshit.
