U.S. Figure Skater Says Speaking Out Against Russia's Antigay Law Would Be 'Rude'U.S. figure skater Jeremy Abbott wont be voicing disapproval of Russias so-called gay propaganda law while competing at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. In fact, he thinks to do so would be a little rude, according to the Denver Post.
Several of Americas top figure skaters arrived at the World Arena last week for Champ Camp, where Abbott, a three-time U.S. National Champion, was asked about his feelings competing in a country where LGBT people are being denied basic human rights.
Russia is hosting us, Abbott told the Denver Post. I'm not going to go into somebody's house and be like, Um, the way you decorate is hideous, and you need to completely redo this or I'm never coming back. It's a little rude, so I don't want to say bad things about a country that's hosting the world, essentially.
Maybe I don't agree with their policies, and maybe I don't agree with some things, but that's for them to sort out, he added. My speaking out just makes me look like an ass.

Well to begin with, him speaking out now just makes him look like a bigger ass and a comment someone left at the rticle sums it up pretty good "That's like being invited someone's home, discovering that they have people chained up in their basement, and just shrugging it off as being none of your business."

(9,286 posts)Its not like we have a choice to go to Russia or not. If you want to participate you HAVE to go to Russia.
And lets not forget how fucking rude it is for Russia to tell Gay athletes and fans that they are subhuman and forbid them a right to speak out on their own behalf. And how fucking rude is it to ignore the oppression of others.
If this was Nazi Germany would it be rude to speak out? Or pre-civil war america it would be rude to speak out on behalf of the slaves?
This is nothing but an attempt to silences those who object to the law!

I wonder what he would do if he went into someone's house and saw horrible abuses going on, beatings, dehumanizing acts, and such? "My, what beautiful carpet you have! Here, I skate."
The main reason for a host country is economic (one could argue pride, but...) and based on that, you do get to criticize the host country. If the venues weren't up to par with the Olympic ideal, people would throw a fit and the possibility of that country hosting anytime soon would be in jeopardy. And the subject here isn't unsafe locker rooms or lack of seating. This is human rights violations. WTF are people thinking?
Hosting the Olympics is an honor to the host country. They aren't doing the Olympics a favor.

Jeremy Abbot really did make a bigger ass of himself by speaking out about not speaking out in Russia.
