‘The Gaymmys’: Conservatives go nuts after Grammy Awards feature same-sex weddings

Conservative groups were incensed by the massive marriage ceremony performed at the Grammy’s last night.

The headline at The Drudge Report this morning spoke of “THE GAYMMYS,” and Twitter was overrun with people discussing the ceremony officiated by Queen Latifah during Macklemore’s performance of the same-sex marriage anthem “Same Love.”

At the conservative site Free Republic, a commenter who confessed to “see[ing] gays at the store” complained about how “[t]hey take every venue, every event, and have to gay it.” Another prayed that “the hands of the demented who applauded this sickeness rot off at their limp wrists.”

Those on the left generally applauded the ceremony. Hemant Mehta, the Friendly Atheist, tweeted:

Gay couples just got mass-married and now robots are embracing each other. All those conservatives' nightmares have come true. #GRAMMYs

There was, however, some legitimate criticism. While there were many gay marriages on stage, there was very little gay kissing:

And yes - confirmed - CBS cut from any gay kissing. Sigh. #GRAMMYs

And straight allies were reminded that gay marriage isn’t “the end-all/be-all” of LGBT issues:

Macklemore and other straight "allies" need to understand that gay marriage isn't the end-all/be-all of queer rights and identity. #GRAMMYs

But for the most part, conservatives felt like the aggrieved party both during and after the Grammy Awards, especially after learning that former NBA player Jason Collins, who came out last year, would be sitting next to Michelle Obama during the State of the Union address tomorrow.

“Every event in American has to be centered on homosexuality,” they complained. “The Russians” – whose strict anti-LGBT laws have come under international fire in the run-up tot he Sochi Winter Olympics – “might be civilization’s only hope.”

It was a mix of different marriages last night. It was not just gay marriages. I wish the story would have some truth to it at least. Who cares about this. Although I would not get married on a tv show, some folks decided it would be different to do so. I don't see what the big deal is at all.

Most of the right wing outrage has been manufactured after the fact.

Well, fucking DUH! Let's see, from the lyrics of "Same Love":

And a certificate on paper isn't gonna solve it all
But it's a damn good place to start
No law is gonna change us
We have to change us

Seems our straight ally, Macklemore, does fucking get "it!"

As for the other comments, I laugh in their general direction.

Unless Jason's gonna actually be making out with Obama during the speech, it doesn't seem like him sitting there is going to make the event about homosexuality any more than Michelle sitting there as Obama's wife makes the event about heterosexuality.

Too often the LGBT rights movement is reduced to the images of two gay people getting married, when in general our movement is much larger than that.

I'm not a huge Macklemore fan, although I do like the Same Love song. I do worry that people forget that he's certainly not the first hip hop artist to support equality and not even the first to record a song expressing support for our community. Sometimes I fear the media buys too easily into some misrepresentation claiming that black people (and thus hip hop) are homophobic and (white) Macklemore is offered in juxtaposition at the exclusion of black allies within the music industry.

But that moment last night was beautiful, and I loved that Daft Punk was quick to note how touching they thought it was during their acceptance speech for Album of the Year.

So many rights and privileges are afforded by marriage that once LGBT marriages are legally recognized in enough states, you will not be able to stop the tsunami of equal rights legislation that will naturally follow.

But certainly marriage is a key part of it, especially for couples.
