UK: First same-sex couples to become legally married tonight!

Sue Wilkinson and Celia Kitzinger, 60 and 57, married in Canada in 2003, and have fought a long battle to have their marriage recognized in the UK.

At one minute past midnight tonight, as part of the same-sex marriage act comes into effect, they will be one of the first British couples to be recognized as legally married.

New same-sex weddings in England and Wales will commence on the 29th of this month, as the legislation does not come into effect all at once, and all new marriages require a notice period.

However, the notice period can be waived for marriages where one or both of the partners is terminally ill, meaning that from tonight such couples will also be able to marry, in addition to the recognition of existing overseas marriages.

I heard Scotland will join Wales and England in recognizing gay marriages but I don't know when that comes into effect.
