Franklin Graham: Putin is better on gay issues than Obama

(RNS) Evangelist Franklin Graham is praising Russian President Vladimir Putin for his aggressive crackdown on homosexuality, saying his record on protecting children from gay “propaganda” is better than President Obama’s “shameful” embrace of gay rights.

Graham, who now heads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association started by his famous father, praises Putin in the March issue of the group’s Decision magazine for signing a bill that imposes fines for adults who promote “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations to minors.”

The Russian law came under heavy criticism from gay rights activists, and from Obama, ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. In response, Obama included openly gay athletes as part of the official U.S. delegation to Sochi.

“In my opinion, Putin is right on these issues,” Graham writes. “Obviously, he may be wrong about many things, but he has taken a stand to protect his nation’s children from the damaging effects of any gay and lesbian agenda.”

1. Quite honestly I have no time for Franklin or his father.....

I admire his father for his passion but Franklin is a big disappointment......

To say that he likes Putin for protecting children from gay propaganda as opposed to BO's embrace of gay rights is despicable.

First of all, the perception among homophobes that gays "proselytize or recruit" young boys and girls into homosexuality is a figment of their imagination. That would be pedophilia and that is primarily the purview of heterosexual men on young girls.

What they call "propaganda" is an outreach to young LGBT youth who feel lost, bullied, abandoned by their friends and family. It is a message that it will get better. It is a message that you are ok. Please don't harm or kill yourself.

What the RW continues to perpetuate is the idea that sexual orientation is a choice. Therefore any message to young boys with an attraction to other boys is not only "sinful" but also something that can be changed. If you communicate a message that "that's okay" becomes an anathema to them.

Further to say that denying a person equal rights or protection under the law is somehow bad is quite honestly not Christian. But I will say here and now Franklin Graham is NOT a Christian. He has not read the Bible except for the parts that fit into his hateful view of the world and his hatred of others will eat him alive.
