Christian group attempts to link Robin Williams’ rehab efforts with ‘ex-gay’ therapy

A senior fellow at the conservative Family Research Council (FRC) invoked comedian Robin Williams’ past drug and alcohol addiction in a column defending so-called “ex-gay” therapy, Slate reported.

“Whatever the motivation, there are those who have simply made a choice to walk away from the homosexual lifestyle, without clinical help — much like how Robin Williams simply stopped using drugs and alcohol in the 1980′s,” Peter Sprigg wrote on the organization’s blog on Monday. “Others have sought professional help, perhaps at the urging of family members, in the form of ‘sexual reorientation therapy’ — much like when Williams entered a formal alcohol rehab program in 2006.”

Sprigg accused “homosexual groups” of pressuring medical organizations like the American Psychological Association (APA) into denouncing this type of therapy, which has already been banned in California and New Jersey, by enacting unrealistic success standards that are motivated by ideology rather than scientific data.

“If it is tolerable for some people to try to change from ‘gay’ to straight — and for others to help them with the process — that might imply that it is tolerable to believe that there is something wrong with homosexuality itself. For ideological reasons, that is a belief that homosexual activists want stamped out at all costs,” Sprigg wrote.

Williams was an ally to LGBT community and using his name for that bullshit proves there is no low these fundie groups won't go.

They hide behind their religion like its a shield, and then proceed to prove time and time again they are the ones who lack any sense of morality or common fucking human decency.

US: Pro-gay group counters God Hates Fags church’s plans to picket Robin Williams funeral

A pro-gay group has raised over $40,000 for one of Robin Williams’ favourite charities, after the Westboro Baptist Church announced plans to protest his funeral...

...However, Planting Peace, a group that last year set up a Pride-themed Equality House opposite the church, is attempting to overshadow the message of hate with one of love, by raising money for one of the actor’s chosen charities, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The group’s co-founder Aaron Jackson told Huffington Post: “When the WBC announced they were protesting Robin’s funeral, we felt like launching a fundraiser for a charity Robin loved would be the perfect way to honour him and counteract the message of hate and intolerance that the WBC continues to convey...

...The group’s Crowdrise campaign has so far raised over $40,000 (£24,000) for the hospital....
