Tyler, Texas Bans PFLAG Display From Library

Earlier this week, we told you how the mayor of Longview, Texas had issued a proclamation declaring June LGBT Pride month, but then said it was against his personal beliefs.

Now, officials in a neighboring city have taken a similar jab at gay rights – pulling a display set up in the library by Parents, Families, Friends and Allies United with LGBTQ People (PFLAG).

The public library in Tyler, Texas — just down the road from Longview — had invited author Lou Anne Smoot to speak about her book, "A Christian Coming Out: A Journal of the Darkest Period In My Life," on Monday, June 8. Smoot and others set up a PFLAG display in conjunction with the talk.

But then city officials reportedly got complaints that the display was too close to the children's section, so they removed it and canceled Smoot's talk. From KYTX-TV:

"When you see that empty display case I felt empty inside. I thought you know, for the first time we had this opportunity and then it was jerked away from us, like pulling a rug out from under you," PFLAG Member Lou Anne Smoot said. ...

"Fighting the prejudice that is prevalent in this area is very difficult, most gays stay in hiding because of fear," Smoot said.

Tyler City Manager Edward Broussard says this isn't prejudice. He tells us that the display will be moved to the adult section. He also released a statement saying,"we are looking at how we involve the community in selection of programming. I see this as an opportunity to revamp our processes to make them more inclusive and equitable."

Is amazing for Tyler.

Then it sounds like people got scared and caved.

"He tells us that the display will be moved to the adult section." - If this was really the issue, why didn't they just move it and carry on??????

"[W]e are looking at how we involve the community in selection of programming. I see this as an opportunity to revamp our processes to make them more inclusive and equitable." - Does this translate to, "Somehow this slipped by the fundies, but we're not going to let *that* happen again"?????

If you buy roses for family occasions or just to have flowers in the house, ask the florist where they were grown. Boycott if they're from Tyler, and tell the florist why.

Better option: give your SO or yourself an environmentally friendly EarthKind rosebush. They'll have flowers for months instead of just a day or two.
