Four Trans Women Were Killed or Found Dead This Month Alone

Since the beginning of March, four trans women—Tatiana Labelle, Paloma Vazquez, Elise Malary, and most recently, Kathryn Newhouse—all of whom were women of color, have reportedly been murdered or found dead in suspicious circumstances at a time when violent attacks on trans people have been on the rise. Already, 2022 has seen at least seven confirmed murders of trans people, People reports. Their tragic deaths come as state legislatures and governments pass bill after bill to dehumanize trans people, rather than protect them from violence.

The number of murders and mysterious deaths of trans women of color this month is alarming. And rather than “focus on getting right to a body count,” Gillian Branstetter, press secretary of the National Women’s Law Center and co-founder of the Transgender Journalists Association, tells Jezebel it’s important to recognize “there’s a lot of violence and trauma you can experience before you’re murdered.”

After 2021 saw the most reported murders of trans people of any year in recent history at 57, Labelle, Vazqez, Malary, and Newhouse can’t just be numbers.

These are the consequences of the hate-filled, bigoted bills being pushed in red states - with Texas and Florida and Idaho seemingly leading the way.

These are the consequences of "maybe they don't deserve the same rights" or dismissing calls for equality as "wanting a pony."

These are the consequences of refusing to push back on hate, because "Fighting for this isn't a winning strategy for the Dems."

These are the consequences of "Whatever. You're such a small minority anyway."

These are the consequences of deadnaming, misgendering, and pegging trans people.

When you dehumanize a segment of the population, it only encourages the more hateful and violent of society to think "It's okay to hurt or kill trans people." Not unlike what we saw (and are seeing again) with blacks. Not unlike what we saw done to the Jewish under Hitler.

Words DO hurt.

I hate it when people pretend that words don't hurt and say shit like at least you didn't get beaten up, how bad could it be? you're being over sensitive. That so pisses me right off. It's dangerous to be trans these days these assholes have no clue how it is..If I had a dime for every asshole comment...

Hearing people's hate, being talked to like we're beneath them or less deserving of rights... That alone hurts. Sometimes words can hurt worse than fists.

Then toss in how such words fuel the hatred of people who feel it's okay to put action to their hate... Only makes it even worse. I fear that the longer the QOP launches these attacks upon us, the worse the violence against us is going to get.

It needs to stop, and people need to push back. The QOP can't be allowed to control the dialogue on everything - especially human rights.

White, male, cishet, conservative... To them, they're the only humans on Earth.

The rest of us? "3/5" of a human, at best.

Another reason it gets to me listening to people want to bargain away on LGBTQ rights... They fail to get they too are on the list. Lower on the list than us? Of course. But unless you're just like them, they're on the list. And once the QOP is done with us - one way or another - they'll go to the next targets on the list.

We're not dealing with sane people, or an "opposing" political party.. We're dealing with fascist terrorists.
