New MTV series tells gay teens that things improve once you have survived the high school years

THE PREMISE of “It Gets Better,” that life improves dramatically after high school for gay teenagers, is tempered by the tacit acknowledgement that before then, it can get pretty bad.

The subjects of the show also remind us that while peers can be cruel, the first biggest challenge often is telling your parents.

In the end, though, “It Gets Better” argues that honesty is almost always the long-term ticket to shedding the stress and getting a fair shot at happiness.

It focuses on two teens as they struggle with coming out, a declaration neither their parents nor friends will rush to embrace, and one transgendered post-teen who has already been through the toughest parts.

It does get better, but we adults have to work for it too. We also need to get younger adults involved in politics so they can start helping make it better for the sake of our children.
