Groups help gay students equalize

Students in gay-straight alliance groups at local high schools are discovering who they are, that they have a voice and that people in their schools and community are listening.

About 16 students from four high schools in Eugene and Springfield spoke Saturday as part of a discussion titled “Pride and Prejudice: Fighting for Gay, Lesbian and Transgendered Rights in Oregon.” It was sponsored by the Lane County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon and Basic Rights Oregon, a Portland-based nonprofit group working for equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered residents.

The students shared their frustrations about bullying and harassment, including the still-too-common slur, “That’s so gay.”

They also shared their accomplishments — increased awareness of the alliances; an annual “Pink Prom” for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students and their “straight allies,” launched last year by Churchill High School Gay-Straight Alliance; and events such as Willamette High School’s “Day of Silence,” which honors those who have been silenced in the past.

Although naming the group Pride and Prejudice isn't exactly a flattering reference. Lol. Last thing we need is to be seen as self-entitled socialites.
