Groups help gay students equalize
Students in gay-straight alliance groups at local high schools are discovering who they are, that they have a voice and that people in their schools and community are listening.
About 16 students from four high schools in Eugene and Springfield spoke Saturday as part of a discussion titled Pride and Prejudice: Fighting for Gay, Lesbian and Transgendered Rights in Oregon. It was sponsored by the Lane County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon and Basic Rights Oregon, a Portland-based nonprofit group working for equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered residents.
The students shared their frustrations about bullying and harassment, including the still-too-common slur, Thats so gay.
They also shared their accomplishments increased awareness of the alliances; an annual Pink Prom for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students and their straight allies, launched last year by Churchill High School Gay-Straight Alliance; and events such as Willamette High Schools Day of Silence, which honors those who have been silenced in the past.
