Y.A. for Change RALLY, October 22, 2005, Raleigh, NC

History In 2006, after organizing a statewide rally and march to advocate for the passage of the School Violence Prevention Act, a group of youth, Lena Eckert-Erdheim (Durham School of the Arts), Ashleigh Pippin (Sanderson High School), and Siobhan Burke-Siegemund (Homeschooled), with the suport of their undergraduate advisor Robert Wells (UNC-Chapel Hill) and their adult allies, Amy Glaser and Laurie Wolf, founded iNSIDEoUT to support and connect lgbtiq-allied youth and Gay-Straight Alliances in North Carolina. They chose the name on the lawn at Weaver Street Market on March 5, 2006. In May of that year, the students gathered their peers from 19 high schools in the Triangle for the First Annual iNSIDEoUT Banquet and Gaiety, elected a new youth board for the coming year, and together formulated the group's original mission and vision. Since then, iNSIDEoUT has held educational workshops, hosted speaker panels, experimented with drag, put on a rock concert benefit show, celebrated Pride and Halloween, lobbied legislators in Raleigh, gone camping, canoeing, and hiking in the Smoky Mountains, held youth leadership lock-ins and board retreats, published annual issues of Backwords, a zine featuring art and writing by local teens, visited dozens of Gay-Straight Alliances, maintained an online library of resources for youth and GSA leaders, hosted an annual queer prom, and held monthly meetings for iNSIDEoUT and GSA leaders. In 2009, Amy Glaser co-founded Outside In 180 to provide the legal grounding and adult support needed to back the youths' organizing efforts. In January of 2011, Michelle Bermeo, Megan Dawson, Michelle Garst and Vanessa Roth formed the first Outside In 180 Board.
