Ken Mehlman: ‘I Am Sorry’ For Helping Bush Exploit Anti-Gay Sentiment, ‘I Wish I Had Spoken Out’

Former RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman has issued what may be his first public apology for his role in fomenting anti-gay sentiment during President George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election bid:

As for his role in the 2004 Bush campaign and its exploitation of marital politics, Mehlman is candid — and remorseful.

“At a personal level, I wish I had spoken out against the effort,” he says. “As I’ve been involved in the fight for marriage equality, one of the things I’ve learned is how many people were harmed by the campaigns in which I was involved. I apologize to them and tell them I am sorry. While there have been recent victories, this could still be a long struggle in which there will be setbacks, and I’ll do my part to be helpful.”

He had money, fame, power AND a private life when he was working to fuck over people as Bush's Meanie.

Now, he wants to be accepted into a community that he fucked over for all those years, and he thinks he can get away with a fast apology because that community tends to be forgiving and open and inclusive.

It's not for me to forgive the bastard, but I think he's a sack of fetid crap and if it were up to me, he would not be given any "accolades" for finally realizing that he was a total shithead.

He can "be helpful" by hanging his head in shame and getting the fuck off the stage, and taking his weaselly little name recognition with him. Why should he suck up any of the light and fame and ATTENTION that someone who has been working for equality all along merits? You know damn well what's going to happen with this jerk--the TV producer will say "We need someone to give the gay perspective on this issue," and the networks will be calling THAT asshole, who will get appearance fees and maybe a retainer, because he is a known quantity who knows how to react to questions, who understands sound bites, and who knows how the red light/on-the-air shit works.

He does not deserve to be the mouthpiece for any views or opinions WRT the community he scorned. Fuck him and the hobby horse he rode in on.

I hope no one ever loves him, or that anyone he falls in love with leaves him.

Gay or straight or in-between, no one can love a piece of shit.

When we needed you most, you did everything you could to enrich yourself (personally and professionally) at our expense. Don't darken our doorstep anymore; you're the very definition of evil.

I believe in second chances. What he did was awful in 2004. However, I read he and Cheney worked to get equal marriage passed in Maryland by calling Republicans.

...Mehlman deliberately damaged his LGBT "brothers and sisters" for power and profit. I would be loath to trust another word out of his mouth although he will be watched to see if he keeps his promise to help the community.

When my own brother, who has been so kind to my partner and I in so many ways, wanted to stay with us while he volunteered for the Republican convention, my partner put her foot down and said "No." Her thinking was that his support of a party that made fodder of our rights was a personal betrayal.
