Feminist writer Germaine Greer has been glitter-bombed at a book-signing today in New Zealand for her comments about trans women, including a 2009 column which said they ‘seem to us ghastly parodies’ and claimed being trans was a ‘delusion’.

The Queer Avengers group took exception to Greer’s brand of what it termed “transphobic feminism” and delivered the glitter in a move more often seen deployed on homophobic politicians in the US.

Germaine Greer unsuccessfully opposed the election of a trans woman to the staff at the women-only Newnham College, Cambridge in the 1990s and the group highlighted her opposition to regarding trans women as women.

In her 1999 book, The Whole Woman, she wrote: “Governments that consist of very few women have hurried to recognise as women men who believe that they are women and have had themselves castrated to prove it, because they see women not as another sex but as a non-sex.

Germaine Greer is a hateful (insert whatever obscenity you want here).

"Gender reassignment is an exorcism of the mother"
- Germaine Greer "The Whole Woman' (1999, 2000)r

Introductory note by Lynn Conway:

Germaine Greer is notorious among trans women as one of the feminist vigilantes who went on an anti-transsexual rampage in the 1980's and 1990's. Along with feminist academic Janice Raymond, author of the notorious book The Transsexual Empire: The Making of the She-Male, Greer went on a witch-hunt to find and 'out' stealthy postop women.

Raymond and Greer (and their ideological followers) especially targeted trans women who had successfully obtained good employment. They went after these women without remorse, in efforts to publicly defame them, cost them their livelihoods, and force them into social marginalization (which Raymond and Greer apparently thought they deserved).

Physicist Rachel Padman of Cambridge University became one of Greer's special targets in 1996 (Greer ruthlessly outed and attacked Rachel in the UK tabloids). Fortunately, Rachel was really well-liked at Cambridge, and was able to survive Greer's wrath.

...

Nevertheless, Germaine Greer continues to viciously defame trans women even now, as we see below, and her books are still widely read and taken quite seriously in "women's studies" programs in many universities.

Nasty, vicious stuff.

Nowadays we are all likely to meet people who think they are women, have women’s names, and feminine clothes and lots of eyeshadow, who seem to us to be some kind of ghastly parody, though it isn’t polite to say so. We pretend that all the people passing for female really are. Other delusions may be challenged, but not a man’s delusion that he is female.

Germaine Greer

Greer is a ghastly parody of feminism. What she did to Rachel Padman would be considered a hate crime today. Greer was so vicious in her attacks against Padman, that she, Greer, was forced to resign from the college in 1996 when her hate campaign failed. Almost all the other Fellows supported Rachael, and she's still there (she just promoted to member of the board) while Greer is out peddling her special brand of hate.

For a real whiff of Germaine Greer, plod through The Whole Woman to see what she things about genital mutilation.

In her recent book, The Whole Woman, Ms Greer argued that attempts to outlaw the practice amounted to "an attack on cultural identity", adding: "One man's beautification is another man's mutilation."

She said that women should have the right to undergo genital mutilation as a form of "self-decoration" and posed the question: "If an Ohio punk has the right to have her genitalia operated on, why has not the Somali woman the same right?"

However, in a report published on Thursday - coincidentally the International Day Against Violence Towards Women - the select committee accused Ms Greer of a "misplaced sense of the sanctity of culture".

The MPs cited figures from the World Health Organisation which estimated that between 85 and 115 million women worldwide had undergone some form of genital mutilation which doubles their risk of dying in childbirth and can increase by three to four times the chances their children will be stillborn.

Pamela Bone to Germaine Greer in Melbourne last week:

I then asked why it was that Western feminists seemed so reluctant to speak out against things such as honour killings.

Greer: "It's very tricky. I am constantly being asked to go to Darfur to interview rape victims. I can talk to rape victims here. Why should I go to Darfur to talk to rape victims?"

Questioner (me): "Because it's so much worse there."

Greer: "Who says it is?"

Questioner: "I do, because I've been there."

Greer: "Well, it is just very tricky to try to change another culture. We let down the victims of rape here. We haven't got it right in our own courts. What good would it do for me to go over there and try to tell them what to do? I am just part of decadent Western culture and they think we're all going to hell fast and maybe we are all going to hell fast."

I can't believe she has an ounce of credibility left as an author, but of course, I keep saying that about Charles Murray and he keeps getting book deals too.

What a vicious and ugly person.

I'll never forgive Paglia for saying Matthew Shepard got what he deserved. These women are toxic and the sooner we move past whatever hatred was burning them up, the better. Fascists nails it.

So did Molly Ivins.

Impolitic, by Molly Ivins.

I Am the Cosmos

Austin, Texas --- ``So write about Camille Paglia,'' suggested the editor. Like any normal person, I replied, ``And who the hell might she be?''

Big cheese in New York intellectual circles. The latest rage. Hot stuff. Controversial.

But I'm not good on New York intellectual controversies, I explained. Could never bring myself to give a rat's ass about Jerzy Kosinski.
Never read Andy Warhol's diaries. Can never remember the name of the editor of this _New Whatsit_, the neo-con critical rag. I'm a no-hoper on this stuff, practically a professional provincial.

Read Paglia, says he, you'll have an opinion. So I did; and I do.

Christ! Get this woman a Valium!

...

There is one area in which I think Paglia and I would agree that politically correct feminism has produced a noticeable inequity. Nowadays, when a woman behaves in a hysterical and disagreeable fashion, we say, "Poor dear, it's probably PMS." Whereas, if a man behaves in a hysterical and disagreeable fashion, we say, "What an asshole." Let me leap to correct this unfairness by saying of Paglia, Sheesh, what an asshole.

convinced everytime I see a second wave feminist spouting a bigoted diatribe against part or all of the LGBT community that I chose correctly when I chose to support the third wave brand of feminism. I am not saying that all or even most of second wavers are like this, but there is a reason that Rebecca Walker et al, felt the need to go off in a slightly different direction and it is more apparent to me all the time that they were right.
