the desire for a forum to debate topics like "how can we best separate LGBT parents from their biological children".

Its how we learn to talk about these things. Mind sharpening shit and all that.

That poster is a troll, plain and simple. They use "practicing debate" as cover for their ban-worthy positions and have for years.

"some people say" approach and it matters not who is hurt in the process by the legitimization of what "some people say".

is making a fool of themselves.

I'm fine with people who don't like homosexuals, don't want to associate with them, (like they think they have a choice), or whatever.

But DU members who want to limit the rights of LGBT folks in the area of parenting, families, hospital visits, whatever, I don't think those people deserve to stay on DU and promote their bigotry and ignorance and lack of understanding of basic human rights.

If I found a post like that, I'd be happy to suggest that that poster be banned, for such Republican-like ignorance.

It is a Meta issue and I don't know whether or not they like Meta conversations brought to this safe haven.

Edit - and member is not outright promoting this as a "good idea", more that it is a legitimate conversation, with 2 legitimate sides that should be legitimately debated.

I must have misunderstood.

Just looking to put this is context with whatever thread is out there.

The downside is legitimizing things that have no legitimate reason to stand as a valid side in an argument.

The merits of taking away children from LGBT people who undergo 'conversion' to hetero and then back to LGBT (as one of several of the examples cited) is not a legitimate side in a debate, unless you are prepping David Duke to run for mayor of EuroWhites, USA.

So many that there are enough to sometimes be picked to sit on juries in aggregate, where they can gleefully allow homophobic posts to stand.

Have you noticed the amazing number of relative newbies at DU? There has been a steady drift to the right at DU over the past 2 years, and this plunge in progressive thinking has accelerated very rapidly recently. I'm not saying that every newbie is a conservative, I'm just sayin', ya know...

The more conservative members that DU has, the larger number of homophobic members it will have.

Although we, the LGBT community, have made significant gains in the past few years, it pretty much goes without saying that we need to remember that almost every single RWer/republican hates us, and that more than a few conservative Democrats do also.

No liberal or progressive, be they Democrat or other, could feel this type of unwarranted hate, bigotry, simply because of the nature of their hearts and minds.

We still have a long, hard row to hoe tomorrow, and it's gonna hurt sometimes.

I love you all big lots.
