1866: Martha McChesney Berry born (educator)

1907: Helen MacInnes born (writer)

1957: Jayne Torvill born (ice skater, ice dancing Olympic medalist)

1985: Lynette Woodard selected as first woman to play for the Harlem Globetrotters. Woodard was captain of the US Olympic women's basketball team that won a gold medal in 1984.

1991: At a press conference she called, Anita Hill publicly accused Clarence Thomas, nominee for Supreme Court Justice, of sexual harassment -- inappropriate and unwelcome sexual comments -- while she worked for him at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
