Related: About this forumhow did you feel about chris brown at the grammy's?
i was happy to read several articles that were critical of his presence and the complicity of the music industry in condoning domestic violence
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/celebritology/post/chris-brown-performs-at-grammys-evokes-strong-reactions-from-fans-and-critics/2012/02/13/gIQALfb2AR_blog.html
The Posts Chris Richards wrote, Brown hopped up and down a terraced stage like a pop-locking Q*bert, trying to dance his way to Americas forgiveness. He was arrested for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammys, but his acceptance speech after winning best R&B album included no act of contrition. When Chris Brown is getting more airtime than Whitney Houston, theres a serious problem.

(20,582 posts)Imo, Whitney's problems with anxiety may have / probably, began because of her time with him. These abusive *'s move on so easily ...... the victims carry the burden and try to escape it forever.

(135,425 posts)I watched Downton Abbey instead. It was a wonderful episode.
I don't think much of that Chris Brown--he's a jerk, and he should be shunned.

(135,425 posts)I can get four distinct PBS stations. They rerun it during the week, often. I can get it most every night save one, I think. They also slap it up "ON DEMAND" midweek or so--about the only thing that my overpriced cable company does well.
southernyankeebelle
(11,304 posts)Both stations show it on the same night at the same time. Sat. we get Masterpiece of other shows. I always watch them. I wish american tv was that kind of quality tv. I even like BBC america. I know you can get some foreign european stations. But they cost extra. I already have starz and we just added HBO. But sunday nights are my favorite nights. But I went to the PBS website and saw that I can watch them there again. I'm happy.

(29,098 posts)That's my one peeve with these series....Too long of a hiatus in between It drove me crazy with the Sopranos
Luckily Game of Thrones is coming back fairly soon....
I'm sad I need to wait so long for Downton Abbey.
Another good one to watch on PBS is Larkrise to Candleford. I don't know if it's on line...I haven't checked but I totally enjoyed it when it was on weekly. I think there may even be another season of that coming up

(41,832 posts)Next week on American Experience on PBS is the Clinton special. That should be interesting.

(53,866 posts)for a long time. i am not literally saying he has to be in jail forever but there is a long way between jail and being honored at grammys
also the article is just merely saying chris brown should not get more time than whitney houston. is not about bobby.
polly7
(20,582 posts)My opinion still stands that mostly all get off much too easily. Unless they've participated in public-education programs / campaigns, etc., and shown some real understanding and remorse .... I'm not sure they shouldn't have to pay forever. Obviously, DV leaves many victims with a life-sentence.

Plus man, we saw the photos. Not all of those people you mention did what he did, and you know it.

(26,094 posts)The industry shouldn't showcase violent criminals. What kind of message is that??? What if he was a rapist, and his victim was sitting in the audience, like Rhianna was last night?
It was a travesty he received only a slap on the wrist from the courts, but then his industry rewards his criminal behavior.
If you were dating a coworker and beat her up and then were convicted of a felony, what would your employer do?

I'm Not Okay with Chris Brown Performing at the Grammys and I'm Not Sure Why You Areohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com
Im frustrated that the mainstream media is covering this story like its any comeback story, like an exiled princes return to a former glory, like this is another political timeline as though some rich and powerful old white men in the music business have not just issued an enormous f**k you to every woman who has been, is or will be on the receiving end of domestic violence.
We should be furious.
Why arent we?

(14,040 posts)about Adele's comeback! That's the only reason I watched. I think I went for a soda or hung out on DU when he was on.
I think it's ironic that Michael Vick gets continuously slagged for what he did to animals (and I used to work at PETA--I'm against what he did too), to the point where people think he should never be able to play in the NFL again (or be out of jail) and no one seems to think beating your girlfriend/wife/S.O. is a big deal. Granted Vick was responsible for the death's of a lot of animals but people are always saying that people are more important than animals. This situation doesn't prove that assertion and the lack of outrage is telling.

He's allowed to earn a living in music, but the industry doesn't have to showcase him.

What really ticked me off was that he really is talented. I loved watching his moves.
My daughter and I texted back and forth during the show, and we both used the same bad word.
We wrote at the same time... too bad he is such a dickhead.

Some people make up fake accounts on twitter, then tweet something outrageous hoping to increase their followers, and then spam people with whatever cr*p they're selling.

This isn't coming out of the blue--the conversation ahead of this has been "Ewwww; who wants to hear or see that creep on a family program? What kind of message is this sending to young children, that a guy who did such a heinous thing is lionized on TV and suffered so few consequences for his ungentlemanly and violent behavior?"
A publicist would take that trash and try to turn it into treasure. I'm not sure this is the best way to go about it, but I have been surprised before at the sensibilities and priorities of the younger generations.

(14,040 posts)"For the Grammys to give Chris Brown two performances on the music industry's biggest night of the year is like saying, 'have one performance for each year you weren't on the Grammy stage because you beat your girlfriend,' " she said.
"It's not only part and parcel of the dismissive way that the industry treats its female artists, but also indicative of its willingness to prioritize violent male performers over other performers that are equally commercially viable."
It's unfortunate but not surprising, she said, especially given the executive producer's comments that the Grammys suffered from a loss of performers because of the beating. Rightly or wrongly so, the media is the message and the messenger, she said.
