States attack ‘Obamacare’ with birth control bills

February 17, 2012|John Miller, Associated Press

Republican lawmakers in a handful of states are opening another front in the war against President Obama’s health care overhaul, seizing on the hot-button issue of birth control with bills that would allow insurance companies to ignore new federal rules requiring them to cover contraception.

Measures introduced recently in Idaho, Missouri and Arizona would go beyond religious nonprofits and expand exemptions to secular insurers or businesses that object to covering contraception, abortion and sterilization.

The ACLU counters, saying such bills discriminate against women.

“Each time more entities are allowed to deny contraceptive coverage, the religious beliefs of some are imposed on others, and gender equality is undermined,’’ said Monica Hopkins, the ACLU’s Idaho director.

They attempt to impose one religion on everyone and then claim it's religious freedom to impose that religion on everyone. (How did "sterilization" suddenly get lumped in there. Have a tubal ligation doesn't harm an embryo (which is what they keep saying the other things do).. seems to me that this objection is strictly the Catholic church, who feels that any form of contraception is "against God's will".

"expand exemptions to secular insurers or businesses" - in my opinion, this is basically an admission that it has not one thing to do with "religious freedom" and had more to do with controlling women's options.

I guess we all already really know this, but I think the nutty-right is so upset that Obama was elected and looks to be elected again, that they are striking back with all they can. I'm sure there is some sort of coordination with these efforts.

I just keep thinking "wow, they look like completely nutjobs" but they still seem to get reelected. I will do everything in my power to get Rubio unelected this time. Without Crist running interference for him (and hopefully with a stronger Dem than Meek), I think we might be able to make him look like the nutjob he is.

Of course, this is Florida, so I guess anything can happen.

It's time to start getting the nutty neocons removed at the state level in a major way. These neanderthals have ruled the home roost for way too long.

Electronic vote stealing machines are a direct results of Republican malthuggery on the state level as well. This is in addition to their anti women, anti choice, anti union, anti environment, anti civil rights and pro Jesus, war, & business crony capitalist patriotic propaganda policy tainting legislating.

Believers in Christ should be mortified. They wrap themselves in His image and wear the Jesus bling but His words & ways are far from their lips and deeds.

/end rant. sorry.
