young sherlock on prime.
another wonderful interpretation of conan doyles beloved character. im such a fan of every iteration i have seen, going back to watching the basil rathbone movies on family classics here in chgo.
its an origin story of sherlock and moriarity, who meet at oxford, where moriarity is a student on scholarship and sherlock gets a job as a scout, aka a slave to the porters. hes a trouble maker just released from prison for pick pocketing for the fun of it. mycroft manages to get him the job.
they 1st get together to solve the mystery of stolen chinese scrolls, brought to the college by a princess. they discover that the theft is a set up for a bomb that they manage to prevent killing a bunch of profs at a meeting. and off they go.
sherlock is framed for the murder of a prof, moriarty breaks him out of prison so they can solve the crime. and ill stop w the spoilers there.
beautiful scenery, high production values, great cast, and a well done mystery. lots of nods to the cannon.
cant rec enough.

(2,151 posts)I felt that they had Moriarty teaching Holmes some things about investigating, looking at evidence, etc. That M was an inspiration to H in the future. An interesting take on their relationship. I hope there is a second season.

(2,151 posts)There were a couple of times I thought, uh oh, the evil Moriarty is showing. When he asks how the woman felt when she killed someone, and he says that he didn't feel anything. Sounds like a psychopath/sociopath? I would expect a second season would have something happen to cause a break in the friendship. I think having them start out as friends makes their later enmity sadder, to think what was lost. And it could be why Moriarty would have insight to how Sherlock thinks, them having worked closely together in the past.

(1,361 posts)We just watched the last episode of The Count of Monte Christo (PBS version) last night, which was GREAT, by the way, and I was looking for a new series to watch.

(2,151 posts)I had to laugh at myself when it was over. I kept thinking through the parts that showed the older Count, who is the actor? He looked so familiar to me. But I realized it wasn't another actor, but when Dantes was looking dower, with a full beard he reminded me of prosecutor Jack Smith, lol.
Also, the actor who played the greedy banker (Blake Ritson) played the son of Christine Baranski/Agnes Van Rijn in The Gilded Age if you happened to watch that. I'm always impressed to see actors in different roles and what kind of range they have.
