"The Story of Film"--originally made for Britain's Channel 4
This is a history of film with a difference, in that it takes a more international and conceptual view of film history than the typical documentary. I just watched the first episode, and even though I'm pretty familiar with film history, I learned a lot. The emphasis is on how techniques were developed that are still used today and their emotional effects on the viewer. The clips are fascinating and largely unfamiliar.
Streaming on Netflix.

I seem to be watching more arts programming now, and like finding the gems on the streaming sites.

(31,011 posts)I had a hard time enjoying the first episode and didn't even finish. I love documentaries like this, but the narration was something I couldn't get used to.

(47,502 posts)was the narration. I stuck with it and eventually I didn't notice it so much. The man had a very strange way of speaking, but I don't know how to describe it in writing.

It's not the least bit boring and it shows how some British films never got the credit for their advancement of film technique that went to other films instead.
