The Last Kingdom on Netflix

Just finished bingeing on all 3 seasons. Excellent series, better than GoT IMHO. Feels more authentic without all the dragons and White Walkers and sorcery stuff. (Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Highly recommended.

Started filming in July, so next year, probably, for release.

Cornwell got the idea for the series from his own family history. From the link above:

... When he was in his fifties, Cornwell met his birth father, named William Outhred (or Oughtred), and learned the story of his own descent from the Saxons who owned Bebbanburg (now called Bamburgh Castle). Thus was born Uhtred, the protagonist of the fictional tales. ...

Bernard Cornwell has another historical fiction series that I really like but that likely won't show up on Netflix as it's an older one. It's based on the character of Richard Sharpe (a wholly fictitious character) and takes place basically during the Napoleonic Wars in Portugal, Spain and France. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe_(novel_series)

The novels formed the basis for the British ITV channel TV series "Sharpe," starring Sean Bean. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe_(TV_series)

There were two later episodes set in pre-Raj India.

I really wish that one of the streaming services would feature the "Sharpe" series. It's great fun, especially if one - like me - loves Sean Bean, prior to his Ned Stark days on GOT.

4. I'm generally confused about English kings, but Last Kingdom

does a memorable representation of the sickly, outnumbered, serious King Alfred -- the king that started the kingdom, against all odds.

9. Good storytelling. Not the level of spectacle that GoT is, just a smaller scale, but makes for a

more cohesive experience as not as many sub-plots, characters, conflicts going on. How does Vikings stack up to The Last Kingdom?
