34 years ago I went into rehab.

I was the only one in my group that wasn’t there because a judge sent me. I was the only one that only went to 3 meetings and never went again. In the end I was the only success.
Not for everyone, but worked for me.

I quit drugs on my own. They had me see a psychiatrist that turned out to be the one that saved my life.
Seems to be a lot of theories on addiction. For me it was self medication for a life of undiagnosed learning disabilities and pstd from childhood abuse. I never had any idea why until I met him. He got me to go back and finish college. I owe him my life.

I will be 75 in February, if I live that long. No rehab but I did continue to smoke weed. I came back to my home state and acquired a drivers license and could not trust myself to not to drive drunk. I have abused my body and mind in many ways but I am so glad I quit drinking.

Cocaine and pills.
Lost every friend I had except for 3 that weren’t drug users. Of course none of the others visited me during those 2 weeks in the hospital.

of getting high, crashing, and having to get high again to function.

It took for my ex, too, I'm glad to say. He wasn't a bad guy, just a drunk. He did go to meetings. I think those gave him what alcohol had, a social outlet for a misfit. He's got a few more years than you, but not many.

Don't be too hard on the guys who were ordered to go after their second DUI or whatever. Sometimes it takes a lot of education to ruin somebody's drinking before they decide they need to quit. Sometimes drinking kills them before that dawns on them.

Congratulations on having rehab take the first time.

I went into rehab a little over 5 years ago. I attend SMART meetings. At this point, I really don't need to attend meetings, but I do it to encourage others who are in their early stages of recovery. I tell them If I can do it, they can too and to just hang in there!
