Kansas Court Plans Ruling Over Ban on Common Abortion Method

The Kansas Court of Appeals is expected to decide Friday whether to allow the state's first-in-the-nation ban on a common second-trimester abortion method.

The ruling, which will come on the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, stems from a lawsuit filed by two abortion providers who said the 2015 law is an unconstitutional burden on women seeking to end their pregnancies. A lower court temporarily put the law on hold during the legal fight, which is being closely watched for its potential to affect the state's other restrictive abortion laws.

The law prohibits doctors from using forceps or similar instruments on a live fetus to remove it from the womb in pieces. Such instruments are commonly used in dilation and evacuation procedures, which the Center for Reproductive Rights has said is the safest and most common abortion procedure in the U.S. in the second trimester.

A similar Oklahoma law also was blocked by a state-court judge, while lawmakers in Nebraska have considered similar measures.

1. What are the alternate procedures?

I'm a strong supporter of Roe v Wade, but I have to tell you, I was about 12-13, home alone, and our dog went into labor. She was having a very difficult time. When my parents came home, we called our vet and took ur dog right in. Now, this dog was my grandmother's dog that we took when Gram died. The dog was about 8 yo. The vey said the puppy was way too big for her to deliver naturally. We had two choices: Cesarean if we wanted the pup, or abort it. Dad said the best would be to abort because Cindy might not have done well in surgery. We stayed while the vet performed the abortion. He too used forceps. It was a horrible experience for me to see. Literally pulling pieces of that puppy out one at a time. I've never forgotten how awful it was.

If there are alternate methods for human abortion, it sure sounds preferable to me.

3. It is possible to administer chemicals to kill the fetus and the woman then goes into labor to

expel the dead fetus, but that is much more difficult on the woman.

2. Cesarean sounds so invasive.

What do they have to cut through to do a cesarean? I think that should be a choice only the woman should decide.
