(25,895 posts)Tuna fish and mayonnaise. I'm not a fan of relish, and don't get me started on Miracle Whip which is mayonnaise already gone sour. Yuck.
I toast the bread, put mayonnaise on the toast, the tuna salad (such as it is) on the toast. Very basic, very simple. Why would anyone want anything more complicated?
Do you want my recipe for coleslaw?

(25,895 posts)Colorful Coleslaw
At least one large head of green cabbage. If you want, add a red cabbage.
Two or three bell peppers, red, yellow, orange, and/or green bell.
1 decent sized carrot, grated.
2 sweet apples. Whatever kind you like. More if you have a lot of cabbage.
Shred the cabbage. Cut up the peppers into small pieces. Peel and cut up the apples. Put all the above ingredients, properly shredded, grated, and cut, into the largest bowl you own. When I make this I use a large aluminum pan. Stir.
Do a few good grinds of pepper, probably a quarter to a half teaspoon. Sprinkle a similar amount of celery seed.
Mix again. Sniff. You want to be able to just smell the ground pepper and the celery seed.
Dressing:
1 cup half and half
1 cup mayonnaise. Use real mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip or whatever that nasty stuff is called.
Sugar. Start with a quarter cup and add more if you want it sweeter.
2 Tablespoons vinegar, 2 tablespoons lemon juice.
Whisk the above ingredients together, taste and if its not sweet enough for you, add a bit more sugar.
Pour dressing over the dry ingredients, toss to coat, and refrigerate. This benefits from an overnight in the fridge.
The dressing recipe is really one of proportions: equal amounts half and half and mayonnaise, enough sugar for desired sweetness, lemon and vinegar for tartness.
Since I dont own a food processor, I cut up the cabbage by hand, which is pretty tedious. Those of you with a processor will find this incredibly easy to do.
You can add raisins to this if you like.

(16,855 posts)either relish or minced dill pickle. I put as many boiled eggs as I do cans of tuna. Add mayo to taste. Celery and onion are good, and you can mince some peppers as well, choosing whatever heat you desire. If I make a tuna sandwich, I like to sprinkle some Creole or Cajun seasoning on the layer of salad before I place the piece of bread on top. Don't use too much, though, or it will be too salty. You can also add capers to the salad. There are so many combinations!

(14,176 posts)The basics of mine are no different from anyone else's--mayo, lots of (maybe too much) celery, scallions (I prefer them over onions for tuna salad because I don't think the fish can stand up to the strength of onions), a bit a mustard, sometimes sweet relish if I remember, sometimes a bit of parsley and lemon zest, sometimes some sesame seeds or walnuts for crunch. (In the past decade I learned that some people put hard boiled egg in tuna salad. That is an abomination.)
But I leaned this trick about using panko on a website because, if you make more than one sandwich's worth of tuna salad you always get that moisture problem--a watery puddle that comes out no matter how well you drain the tuna. The panko absorbs that and seems to give the tuna a more solid texture.

(3,315 posts)And then I put a dollop of the tuna-egg salad on a hamburger bun, put on a slice of cheese, wrap it all in aluminum foil, and bake in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 until the cheese melts.
Just love it.

(6,372 posts)Read a blog that suggested adding quick-pickled red onion. (Slice onion and cover w/vinegar, I used balsamic, and just marinate as long as it takes to gather the other ingredients)
I love this addition.

(17,015 posts)Tuna, hard egg, celery, onion, mayo, dill pickle, and spices. It was so good
When I make it, instead of pickle, I use green or black olives, or both!, along with everything else she used.

(9,581 posts)Albacore white packed in water. Chopped hard boiled eggs, green pepper, onion, pickles, and celery (sometimes I chop in a jalapeno pepper). Dress it with mayonaise and yellow mustard (don't skimp on the mustard), but don't make it too wet or it will be runny by the next day. Salt and black pepper to taste, and if you like, a sprinkle of paprika or cayenne on top. Best served on pumpernickel toast with sliced tomatoes.
I use this same recipe for leftover salmon, with some variation.
Luciferous
(6,085 posts)mayo to bind it all together. I also like to toast the bread 🙂 I think I'll make this for lunch tomorrow!
Retrograde
(10,152 posts)either green onions or finely minced red onions. And some smoked paprika if you have it (hmmm, I suppose powdered chiles would be good, too). Or tarragon. I'm not a big fan of celery (like the taste but not the texture) but Mr. Retro usually makes the tuna salad and adds it.
My high school cafeteria used to make a good cold pasta and tuna salad, with a chopped hard-boiled egg, for Fridays. It was the best of their 10 menus (this was 50 years ago, before spices were discovered )
Trailrider1951
(3,414 posts)Albacore tuna in water, drained, preferably Kirkland brand from Costco.
Finely diced onions, celery and dill pickle (preferably Claussen).
Black pepper, and don't skimp on it.
Hidden Valley Ranch Buttermilk Ranch salad dressing, just enough to bind it together.
Served piled high on a toasted Orowheat onion bun with lettuce or spinach leaves.
Now that's a meal, not a sandwich.
