Cooking & Baking
Related: About this forumIt's 20 degrees outside ... so I made soup.
Cream of tomato basil soup. I add very little sugar and salt. Canned or restaurant soup is inedible to me because its way too salty. I used some cooked tomatoes from my garden last summer that i froze and the dried basil came from my garden, too.
Next up is a grilled cheese sandwich
Longhorn cheddar cheese on sourdough bread. Made in a cast iron skillet. 🙂

(32,005 posts)I have loved this combination ever since I first had it in the elementary school cafeteria! Of course back then they used Campbells soup, Velveeta, and Wonder bread.

(57,073 posts)Haha velveeta, campbell's & wonder bread.

(7,473 posts)20 would seem toasty to me right now. Making a beef stew and Swedish meatballs for the next few days. Cold again tomorrow and a Nor'easter coming Sunday/Monday.
Love my house and my town but sure don't care for the weather this year.

(4,393 posts)Another: Last night I fixed homemade bean, mild warming green chili, sharp cheddar, and beef burritos dressed up with picante, guac, and sour cream for dinner and had enough to freeze for another day! Planning to make a mushroom beef barley soup tomorrow as the potential of Izzy's snow lands 1-3", could be a dud here, but the soup will be still be wonderful!

(4,166 posts)I make the pie crust and chicken broth from scratch. This will keep me warm and happy for several meals.
Diamond_Dog
(32,005 posts)I made that last weekend, but not as from scratch as yours.

(4,166 posts)I use to use Crisco but have finally switched to real butter. The dough is easier to work with and is lighter. I can even is low sodium chicken broth, but since i needed to cook the chicken I just added some onion and celery then strained it out when the meat was done. It takes extra time, but I'm retired and need to fill up a few hours.

(38,560 posts)there's a furnace too, which was serviced a few months ago. It's old, but it works.
I'm also working on an afghan, and it keeps me warm while I'm crocheting.

(32,005 posts)I crocheted a bunch of hats last winter to keep busy and I donated them to a cancer clinic here.
I have seen some of the postings of your afghans, you do beautiful work!

(2,674 posts)Too cold to go anywhere, so made an apple cobbler this afternoon. Had 6 granny smith apples, some refrigerated pie dough, easy to put a cobbler together. I drizzled a tiny bit (less than 1/4 cup dark molasses on the apples after I had sprinkled the sugar mixture over them. This is the second time I have added dark molasses to the cobbler, adds a deeper flavor to the filling. Have only tried it on apple cobbler, might not be as good on blackberry cobbler (2 kinds make most often).
For main meal, I thawed out some tamales, we'd bought a bunch at the Dallas Tamale factory about 2 months ago, heated up a can of Wolf brand chili. Was a good filling meal, perfect for a very cold winter day.
