Someone here had mentioned doing what I am about to describe a few years ago---which destroyed the electronics in her unit-- and I DID take note, but busy life's distractions intervened and I did just what she had warned us not to do. What was that? So, I learned that lesson (I thought) and bought an extra pot liner. But as one was full of yesterday's batch of yogurt in the refrigerator, I thought the second one was in there and started to pour--probably a full cup and a half of milk through before I realized the second liner was actually still in the dishwasher.
So, if you do this... IMMEDIATELY grab towels paper towels, whatever you can find, and gently gently gently wipe everything down. You'll have to find a standard screwdriver to remove the bottom plate, but if you are quick, the liquid may have largely dripped all the way through and not left too much residue on the inner electronics. Then wash off the plate and get your hairdryer to dry every inch you can-- not letting it get too hot when blowing the inner electronic wires. Make absolutely sure every surface has been wiped and dry and then give it the test--which I am doing now. The control panel is working and I've got the milk (safely in its liner) on "boil" for the first stage in making another batch of yogurt. I will come back and report if it works and it successfully survived this horrendous mistake. That said, please put a sticky note near your instant pot. Don't make my near disastrous mistake though! And keep your fingers crossed for me, PLEASE!
**Updated 03/30/2022: I somehow managed to salvage the pot. Seems to be working ok as per post #9. Whew!

(7,715 posts)It's a known desiccant for electronics (i.e., the numerous times we've spilled liquid on phones, keyboards, etc.)?
Best of luck.

(101,715 posts)tried that--or those silicone packs if I could scrounge up enough. The rice might leave a dusty coat on the electronics, though, which could impact them as well.
Such an embarrassing (and expensive) mistake to make so I hope all will earn from my (and the other previous DUer's) mistake.

(9,580 posts)I poured beef broth and oil from a roast for gravy into mine without the liner. I checked on google and everywhere else, and seemed you should wait a good 72 hours after drying it out. I'm not one known for my patience, so I bought another entire instant pot, convinced it would never work again.
Guess what? I have TWO working instant pots. That said, I'm hoping your story turns out well. This is a mistake that is far easier than people think to make.
Fingers crossed for you! Just give it some time, like 72 hours.

(1,697 posts)then put the liner in the pot. I did once pour water in the pot without the liner, but realized the mistake immediately. I let the pot dry out 3-4 days, and it's been working fine since.

(11,853 posts)I learned that the hard way. I now have a second pot, and as soon as we remove one, we put the other one in.
Been using it a lot lately since my son has been coming home late for dinner due to work (chicken fajitas, chicken curry, sweet and sour beef tips, etc.)

(54,255 posts)Miz t. poured a pound of dry black beans into the base container.
No inner pot.
You CANNOT get them all back out.
Some kind of baffles or something.
Shake and shake and shake and you still hear a rattle in there.
Result: New instant pot.

(15,073 posts)And I might very well have poured in a liquid without the liner in a dumb momen except, soon after I got the pot, I read somewhere that its important to load stuff into the liner before putting it into the pot. Ive always done this, apparently averting possible tragedy.

(101,715 posts)I did all the steps in the OP above, plus waited 24 hours afterward to make sure everything had fully dried With fingers firmly crossed, it appears to be working fine. I have, however, started keeping track of replacement costs and may just have to give in and buy a second one. I do use it a lot so...
At any rate, success!
